A farming accident led to the death of a Mt. Blanchard man yesterday. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports that the accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. in a field on Township Road 152 in Delaware Township. 44-year-old Christopher Farver was working on a piece of farm machinery. 77-year-old Leo Smalley was driving a John Deere tractor and pulling an implement, which struck Farver.
Farver was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
06/24/19 – 11:21 A.M.
A man robbed the Exxon gas station on Fostoria Avenue in Findlay this morning. The Findlay Police reports that the man walked into the store just before 7 a.m. and demanded cash from the register. He had a handgun and struck the employee in the face with it. The employee gave the man some cash from the register and he fled west behind some nearby apartments.
Police report that the suspect is a white man around 5’8″ and was wearing a brown short-sleeved shirt and a ball cap. He also had a red bandanna covering his face.
Hanco EMS treated the employee at the scene.
This is the third robbery involving a man in a bandanna in the past two weeks.

A co-owner of Dietsch Bros. is retiring come July 1. 67-year-old Tom Dietsch built some the Findlay business’s candy-making equipment. He explained to the Courier’s Lou Wilin that there is a lot of manufacturing involved in making candy. He said that the manufacturing side has always been his interest.
Dietsch started working in the family business 50 years ago. At that time he was just washing dishes and cleaning tables for his father and uncles.

FOCUS Recovery and Wellness Community will have an open house for a new program this Thursday. The Loft will be open to everyone to see the space, meet staff, and see what the program is about. The Loft is a space for young people between 13 and 18-years-old. It is designed to offer support for youth impacted by mental health, addiction, or trauma.
The open house will be from 12 – 3 p.m. at 1941 Carlin Street. You can learn more at focusrwc.org or on their Facebook page.

The residents of a Tiffin home managed to escape a house fire but lost two puppies in the fire. The Review-Times reports that firefighters were called to 147 E. Center Street around 12:59 a.m. Sunday. The six residents of the home safely got out of the home. EMS crews took four of the residents to ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital due to smoke inhalation.
Firefighters managed to quickly put out the fire. It was confined to an upstairs bedroom. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined yet but Fostoria Fire Chief Brian Herbert said they “can’t rule out reckless smoking”.
06/24/19 – 5:31 A.M.
A Toledo man is in the hospital after a shooting in Fostoria yesterday morning. The Fostoria Police report that 45-year-old Amiko McNeal was shot around 9 a.m. after he had a fight with another man in the area of Fourth and Hale Streets. Officers report that the shooting happened inside of McNeal’s car.
Fostoria EMS took McNeal to ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital. A helicopter then took him to ProMedica Toledo Hospital.
The other man suffered minor injuries and was not identified. No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
06/24/19 – 5:23 A.M.
A small plane crash outside of Gomer in Allen County killed two people Thursday. The Lima Post of the State Highway Patrol reports that the accident happened around 4:42 p.m. in a field southeast of the intersection of Tudor and Sandy Point Roads. Troopers report that it was a single-engine plane that crashed.
Both the pilot and one passenger were killed in the crash. They were pronounced dead at the scene by Allen County Coroner’s Assistant Jamie Sizemore. The victims’ names have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation.
06/24/19 – 5:11 A.M.
A single-vehicle crash sent a McComb teen to the hospital early yesterday morning. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports that 17-year-old Hannah Schroeder was driving on Pleasant Township Road 126 just shortly after midnight. She swerved to avoid hitting a raccoon and drove off the east side of the road into the ditch.
Schroeder suffered minor injuries and PMP Joint Ambulance District took her to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment. Deputies cited her for operating a vehicle without reasonable control.
06/24/19 – 5 A.M.
Findlay Firefighters responded to a fire on Hurd Avenue yesterday evening. The fire was reported just after 7 p.m. yesterday at a triplex at 856 Hurd Steet. The small fire was caused by food left on the stove. It caused smoke damage to one apartment.
Firefighters were on scene for about 90 minutes.

Mosquitoes need standing water to breed and unfortunately, this wet season has given them ample opportunity. Hancock Public Health’s Kurt Schroeder said that it’s likely that we’ll see more mosquitoes this year.
Schroeder said you can try to help keep the population down though…
Schroeder said that you can dump things like bird baths or rain catchers once a week to prevent the mosquitoes from laying eggs. He added that there are water treatment packets available at the Hancock Public Health Office to treat ponds and puddles.
