Hancock County Fair Rolls Into Day 2

8/30/18 – 5:13 A.M.

The Hancock County Fair enters day two today. Some of the highlight events today include exhibits from COSI in the Old Mill Stream Centre from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. There will also be a cookie eating contest at the mini-park at 4 p.m.

Today’s grandstand events feature harness racing in the south grandstand starting at 6:30 p.m. There’s a calf scramble in the north grandstand starting at 7:30 p.m.

Two Facing Heroin Charges In Hancock County

8/30/18 – 5:06 A.M.

Two West Virginia residents are facing drug charges in Hancock County. The Hancock County grand jury indicted 34-year-old Terrell Walker and 29-year-old Shawntrina Alford on possession of heroin charges this week. The charges carry major drug offender specifications. That means they are facing 11 years in prison if convicted.

State Patrol troopers arrested Walker and Alford during a traffic stop on August 15. Investigators say they found 246 grams of heroin in their car.

Findlay’s Moratorium On Medical Marijuana Expires Next Weekend

Findlay’s two-year moratorium on medical marijuana will expire soon. The Courier reports the temporary ban on dispensing, cultivating, or processing medical marijuana ends September 8. City council has one meeting scheduled between now and the deadline.

The state recently finalized regulations governing medical marijuana. According to the newspaper, Mayor Lydia Mihalik says officials are having internal discussions about the issue.

Ohio’s Medical Marijuana Control Program doesn’t list any licenses for businesses in Hancock County.

You Can Drop Off Milkweed Seed Pods For Future Monarch Butterfly Habitats

08/29/18 – 5:25 P.M.

The Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative is asking for your help in collecting common milkweed seed pods. There will be a collection center at the Hancock Soil and Water District from September 1 until October 31. The seed pods will be used to create habitats for the Monarch Butterfly.

The seed pods can be collected when they are dry and gray or brown in color. You can also tell when the pods can be picked by applying gentle pressure. If they pop then they are ready.

Community Organizations Make An Appearance At The Hancock County Fair

There are plenty of community organizations at the Hancock County Fair. JT Huber of the Cory Rawson Boosters said that you can stop by their tent to support the kids.

Old Millstream Building Offers Entertainment Every Night Of The Hancock County Fair

The new Old Millstream Center is up and running during the Hancock County Fair this week. Fair Manager Dave Thomas said that the center is a major improvement for the fairgrounds.

Thomas said that the building is perfect for entertainment purposes.

He also said that there will be a grand opening for the new cattle show arena this Friday at 8 a.m.

Search Continues For Man Who Prompted Stand Off Fears In Fostoria

8/29/18 – 5:22 A.M.

Fostoria Police continue to look for the suspect who caused a heavy police presence at an apartment complex Monday afternoon. The Review-Times reports officers responded to the Eco Village on Peeler Drive after receiving a report about a man threatening a woman with a gun.

The report said the man had barricaded himself in an apartment. Officers searched the area and learned the man had run away before they arrived.

Officials have not released the suspect’s name due to the Fostoria warrant and pending felony warrants from other agencies. Police Chief Keith Loreno says the man is from the Toledo area.

The incident remains under investigation.

Hancock County Fair Gets Harness Racing Grants

The Hancock County Fair has received two grants to promote harness racing this year. The Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association recently awarded the event two $1,500 matching grants. One of the grants is for a race in honor of “Doc” Schoonover. Schoonover was a McComb native who was a lifelong supporter of harness racing. He began racing in 1949 and became the oldest winning driver at the age of 93 when he won at the Attica Independent Fair in 2011.

The second grant is for the Hancock County Agricultural Society Pace. The association awarded it to the fair in recognition of the fair board’s support of harness racing and commitment to the fair’s speed program.
