4/26/17 – 5:00 A.M.

A group of judges in Hancock County want to reform a county jail expansion committee. The Courier reports both common pleas court judges, Judge Kristen Johnson with probate court, and Judge Mark Miller of Findlay Municipal Court all addressed upcoming issues in a letter to the county commissioners.

The judges say pending legislation could force them to sentence more low level offenders to stays at local jails rather than prisons. They also cite increases in services for inmates as part of their reasoning.

The letter says, “it is important to re-establish the jail expansion committee to explore the need for expanding the capacity of the Hancock County Justice Center and also the ancillary services provided by our jail.” Some of the services cited in the letter include a detox unit, work-release program, and an electronic monitoring program.

The commissioners have taken the issue under advisement.

Stantec held an informational meeting at Riverdale High School to talk about their research and proposals. Project Engineer Scott Peyton said that there wasn’t much new information from their February meeting.

That ratio includes the proposed dry storage basins but they won’t be considered for a while. Peyton said that they are focused on enhancing the river over getting the basins right now.

He added that roads seem to be a concern as well.

04/25/17 – 4:20 P.M.

You can get one of your old antiques appraised Thursday for free. First National Financial Services and First National Bank are teaming up to offer the service. They are bringing appraiser Richard Stegman to the Hancock County Historical museum from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Guests coming to the appraisal will be allowed to bring one small item. The event is open to the public and will have light appetizers available

4/25/17 – 8:57 A.M.

Unemployment is down all across the region. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reports the March 2017 unemployment rate is at or below the March 2016 rate in nearly every county in our area.

Hancock County has the lowest jobless rate in the region at 3.5 percent. That’s down from 4.1 percent in February and 3.8 percent a year ago. Putnam and Wyandot Counties are also below 4 percent, at 3.7 percent each.

Elsewhere in the area Wood County was at 4.2, Hardin was at 4.8, and Seneca County was at 4.9. Allen County stood at 5.1 percent and Henry County was at 6.3 percent.

The Fostoria Rail Preservation Society hopes to get a piece of a grant set aside for historical projects. The Review-Times reports the agency is asking for $5,000 from the county commissioners. The organization would use the money to replace signs. The society is also part of a joint request for more than $25,000 to promote museums in Seneca County.

The Fostoria Area Historical Society is asking for $1,500 to complete Volume 6 of a DVD on the History of Fostoria.

The grant money is available in counties affected by the construction of the Rover Pipeline.
