Brian says the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation is thankful to its community partners for making the events possible.

(ONN) – Ohio does not require adults to take driver’s education classes.

The governor wants that to change.

As Ohio law stands now, adults are exempt from having to take driver’s ed to get their license.

In a statement, Governor DeWine called that ridiculous.

The US Department of Transportation shows that 82 percent of accidents are from adults over 18.

The governor believes mandatory training will solve the problem.

At issue is the cost of the classes which could be as high as $600.

The police department received multiple reports of damage to property in the area of Jefferson St., Coe St., Main St., and Madison St.

The damages occurred between Jan. 31st at 11pm and Feb. 1st at 1:00am.

Congratulations to the 2025 We the People state champions, Findlay High School.

This is the 38th year of the We the People competition, and Findlay High School has won 33 of those.

This is the eighth win in a row!

Congratulations to unit four, who had the highest score for our school.

Officers were dispatched to an injury crash on W. Trenton Ave. at the northbound ramp of I-75 at 9:35 p.m. Friday.

The details of the crash are as follows; A gray 2023 Kia Sorento driven by Eric Stuber, 40 of Leipsic was stopped facing westbound on W. Trenton Ave. in the inside westbound lane waiting for a red traffic light.

A white 2007 Ford Focus driven by Clarance Bethel II, 45 of Fostoria was stopped facing westbound in the right turn only lane of W. Trenton Ave. to merge onto I-75.

A silver 2024 Nissan Altima driven by Kalid Abdulaziz Abukar, 40 of Lansing Michigan was traveling northbound on the I-75 northbound exit ramp. Abukar was traveling at a high rate of speed and as he approached W. Trenton Ave he lost control of his vehicle.

The Nissan continued northbound and the right front of the Nissan struck the the left front of the Kia.

The Nissan continued northbound and the front of the Nissan struck the Ford near the driver’s door.

The Ford and Nissan then traveling northbound and were wedged under the guardrail.

Stuber was checked out by Hanco EMS but was not transported.

Abukar was transported by Hanco EMS to Blanchard Valley Hospital with serious injury.

Bethel was pronounced deceased on scene.

An investigation is ongoing and charges will be submitted at the conclusion of the investigation. Assisting at the scene was the Findlay Fire Department, Hanco EMS, Hancock County Coroners Office, and Frank’s Towing.

The Foundation was pleased to participate in the annual Bill Frack Challenge Game at Bowling Green State University.

Bill was a lifelong fan of BGSU Men’s Hoops and established a fund at the Foundation that will benefit the program forever! 

Bill left his legacy as the largest estate gift in the Foundation’s history.

But more importantly, he was an ardent supporter of those experiencing homelessness and domestic violence, and enthusiastic fan of BGSU basketball.

The Blanchard Valley Health System Auxiliary scholarship application period is open, and applications are available online to students in the Hancock County area planning to pursue a health-related career or field of study. 

The purpose of the Auxiliary Scholarship is to financially assist local high school seniors in pursuing a health-related career. Heather Schalk, volunteer services manager, said that profession could range from dental hygienist to nurse to physician.

This year, 10 students will be awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship. The scholarships are funded through the annual Auxiliary membership dues.

“Our Auxiliary members work hard to raise funds to help BVHS through sales at the Blanchard Valley Hospital and Bluffton Hospital gift shops and the Nearly New secondhand shop,” Schalk said. “The money generated through those efforts goes back to fulfilling the organization’s mission. Auxiliary members wanted to do something separate for the community, so they created this scholarship funded through their dues.”

“Members of the committee reviewing these applications have a background in education and find it rewarding to help young members of our community who are exploring healthcare careers,” Schalk said. “We receive so many great applications each year. It’s especially meaningful to read the personal statements, which demonstrate how much passion local young people have for helping others by pursuing health-related careers.”

In addition to making a difference in each scholarship recipient’s life, Schalk said the scholarship also helps sustain the field of healthcare in the region.

“Some past recipients have come back to BVHS to start their careers after graduation,” Schalk said. “We know that Northwest Ohio will need these dedicated healthcare professionals in the future. So, providing scholarships to these individuals also serves as an investment in our community’s workforce.”

To be eligible, an applicant must be a senior in high school attending a school located in Hancock County and/or a health profession student at Millstream Career Center. All necessary portions of the application must be completed online no later than April 15, 2025.
