Toy Express Program Held In Fostoria And Tiffin

(From the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office)

On Saturday, December 07, 2024, the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office obtained children’s toys by partnering with the CSX rail line and First Responders Children’s Foundation on the organization’s annual Toy Express program. The program helps first responders bring holiday cheer to children throughout their communities.

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office passed out the toys they received by participating in the program to children during several events throughout Seneca County on Saturday.

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office was one of 70 law enforcement agencies nationwide selected for the program.

“Often, our jobs require us to have contact with kids during different and challenging circumstances, so law enforcement is the ideal ambassador to help get toys to the kids who really need them. With CSX Rail line and the First Responders Children’s Foundation organizations choosing our Office to partner with them, it allows our Deputies to make a difference in a child’s life, which can be a very fulfilling experience. It’s what the holidays are all about!”…Seneca County Sheriff Stevens said.

“On behalf of our Sheriff’s Office, I would like to thank the CSX Rail line and the First Responders Children’s Foundation Organization for choosing our Office to partner with and certainly for assisting us with spreading holiday joy for the children in our community!” …Seneca County Sheriff Fredrick W. Stevens said.

People Invited To Participate In ‘Wreaths Across America Day’

(From The Hancock County Veterans Service Office and Garner Trucking)

The Hancock County Veterans Service Office and Garner Trucking invite the community to join in a meaningful event on Saturday, December 14, 2024, as we honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans by placing wreaths on their graves at local cemeteries. This annual event is part of the national Wreaths Across America initiative, a mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach, ensuring that the memory of our nation’s heroes endures.

This event is not only a chance to honor and remember but also to unite as a community in patriotic commemoration. By working together, we ensure that no veteran is forgotten. Wreaths Across America came to Hancock County through Jon Brumbaugh’s Eagle Scout project in 2016. In the first year of the program locally, 500 wreaths were placed at Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay.

Since then, the Fort Findlay DAR added the Benton Ridge Cemetery, the Knights of Columbus added St. Michael’s Cemetery, American Legion Post 539 added North Baltimore Cemeteries, and Don Stine brought the program to Eagle Township Cemeteries.

The Village of Arlington Cemetery has been one of the Wreaths Across America local sites for the past few years, but is on pause this year in search of site coordinators. If you are interested in leading the efforts or want more details about the volunteer position for that location next year, please email Nichole Coleman, nrcoleman@co.hancock.oh.us.

In the video below, Sherri Garner Brumbaugh told us that 2,100 wreaths were placed at Maple Grove Cemetery in 2023, an increase of 600 from 2022.

More than 4,000 wreaths were placed at the seven area cemeteries participating in 2023.

The Wreaths Across America mission began as a simple gesture of gratitude and has grown into a national movement uniting communities across the country. This year, more than 4,500 locations will participate in National Wreaths Across America Day, with over three million volunteers coming together to place veterans’ wreaths and teach the next generation about the value of freedom.

In Hancock County, our goal is to place 5,260 wreaths on veterans’ graves at Maple Grove, St. Michael’s, Benton Ridge, North Baltimore, and Eagle Township cemeteries. Sponsoring a wreath is a personal gift of gratitude and remembrance for someone who served this country to protect our freedom. Donations will be accepted through November 30, 2024, and details on how to sponsor a wreath can be found at www.hancockveterans.com.

How You Can Help:

1. Sponsor a Wreath: A $17 donation sponsors a wreath to honor a veteran. Visit www.hancockveterans.com to donate.

2. Volunteer to Place Wreaths: Join us on December 14th with your family, friends, church groups, youth organizations, schools, or scout troops to lay wreaths at one of the five cemeteries. It’s a wonderful opportunity to teach younger generations about the value of freedom and the importance of remembering those who served. Maple Grove, St. Michael’s, Benton Ride and North Baltimore cemeteries ceremonies will all take place at 10:00 AM and the Eagle Township Cemetery will hold their ceremony at 1:30 PM. Full details can be found at www.hancockveterans.com.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 14, 2024, and plan to join us for this important tribute.

For more information about the event, sponsorships, or volunteering opportunities, please visit www.hancockveterans.com or contact the Hancock County Veterans Service Office at veterans@co.hancock.oh.us or call 419-424-7036.

BVHS Seeking Dedicated Volunteers

(From Blanchard Valley Health System)

Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) continues to look for dedicated volunteers to fill a variety of roles.

The organization updates its volunteer opportunities list regularly. Heather Schalk, volunteer services manager, said volunteers today often want flexibility. Some want to volunteer for several hours each week, while others might have less availability but ask to be on the list for a one-time opportunity, like a special event. Schalk meets with each new volunteer individually to get a sense of their interests, skills, and schedule.

BVHS is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with wayfinding at Wellness Park, a new campus on the north end of Findlay which will offer primary care, endocrinology, diabetes management, rheumatology, orthopedics, sports medicine, and podiatry, along with both pediatric and adult physical, occupational, and speech therapies as well as on-site imaging and laboratory services.

“We’re excited about having so many medical specialties and practices at Wellness Park,” Schalk said. “But it’s more than 75,000 square feet in size, and we recognize that patients might be uncertain about where they are going, especially at first. We are looking for volunteers to guide them to their appointments.”

She said the ideal volunteer for this role is “someone who likes to get their steps in,” as it will involve a lot of walking. Volunteers are needed at Wellness Park during weekdays.

“This type of role is rewarding since the volunteers get to know people,” she said. “It can be reassuring for patients to see a friendly face, but we find that the volunteers, too, benefit from getting these kinds of social interactions.”

With the holidays approaching, BVHS is also looking for volunteers to work at the Blanchard Valley Hospital and Bluffton Hospital gift shops. At Blanchard Valley Hospital, volunteers are particularly needed from 5 to 7 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. In Bluffton, the hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

“Our gift shops will be bustling for the holidays so we will be relying on volunteers to help,” Schalk said. “It is a fun, busy, and festive atmosphere this time of year.”

Additionally, BVHS is always looking for high school students to serve as candy stripers. Boys and girls from freshman through senior years are welcome. Up to four candy stripers volunteer from 3:30 to 5 p.m. each weekday after school.

“The experience offers the teens great exposure to the medical world,” Schalk said. “Students thinking about a career in healthcare can see what a hospital is like.”

The responsibilities of the candy stripers include replenishing supplies at the emergency department, distributing items to patients from the “comfort cart,” and making milkshakes for new mothers who have just given birth.

Schalk said teens who are shy may find themselves coming out of their shells. In addition to getting to glimpse a hospital behind the scenes, they will meet a wide range of people.

Other volunteer roles may include assisting patients at Physicians Plus Urgent Care, performing administrative tasks, or helping at the Findlay Surgery Center.

“Volunteers who visit patient rooms often are apprehensive the first time around,” Schalk said. “Generally, we don’t meet someone for the first time when they are sick or in a medical setting. However, the volunteers quickly find they can bring some cheer and comfort not only to the patient but associates on the floor. Just making small talk, taking the patient’s mind off their illness, makes more of a difference than people may realize.”

While Schalk often hears from newly retired people who want to stay busy and give back, all are welcome. This might include college students and stay-at-home parents who have time during the school year.

“Many of our volunteers are motivated by a desire to give back to the community, in general, and we’re so happy they picked BVHS as the place to do so,” Schalk said. “But we also hear from a lot of people who have had a good experience as a patient or saw a loved one receiving great care. These folks are motivated to give back to BVHS specifically because of those experiences, which says a lot about our organization and the compassionate associates providing quality care throughout BVHS. It’s so meaningful each time we hear that.”

The Armes Family Cancer Care Center, in particular, tends to attract volunteers with a personal connection.

“That is one area of the health system where we seldom are short of volunteers,” Schalk said. “So many people in our community want to give back and help others going through cancer treatment. Our organization is grateful for their commitment, and I know they have a positive impact on the lives of our patients.”

Schalk, who has served in this role for 12 years, said every day is different and she enjoys getting to know the volunteers.

“It’s so rewarding when I see a volunteer find something that gives them a sense of purpose or a feeling of making a difference,” she said.
