OSHP Reminding People To Buckle Up And Drive Sober Over Holiday Weekend

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it will be highly visible on Ohio’s roadways promoting traffic safety during the Memorial Day weekend.

As motorists travel this weekend, troopers are reminding drivers to utilize their safety belts and to be responsible by designating a sober driver.

Last year in Ohio, 15 people were killed in 14 fatal crashes over the Memorial Day weekend.

Of those fatalities, five were OVI-related and four were unbelted.

Seven of the eight motorcyclists who died were not wearing a helmet.

The Highway Patrol also made 557 impaired driving arrests during last year’s Memorial Day weekend.

“As you travel about Ohio during the official kickoff to summer, plan ahead by designating a sober driver,” said Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent.

“Driving impaired puts your life and that of others in danger.”

In addition to the Memorial Day reporting period, the Highway Patrol is continuing the 6-State Trooper Project focusing on the use of safety belts.

This high-visibility effort includes the Indiana State Police, Kentucky State Police, Michigan State Police, Pennsylvania State Police, West Virginia State Police and the Patrol.

The initiative began May 23 and will continue through May 30.

The Patrol is also taking part in the Operation CARE All-American Buckle Up campaign, a multijurisdictional program of patrol, enforcement and planning activities committed to reducing crashes. All of these enforcement efforts are part of the broader Click It or Ticket campaign, which runs May 23 through June 5.

Court Rejects Legislative Maps That It Already Deemed Invalid

The Ohio Supreme Court says a set of Republican-drawn Ohio House and Senate district maps that the court previously ruled unconstitutional remain invalid.

Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor accused the GOP-led panel of ‘a stunning rebuke of the rule of law’ for resubmitting maps already invalidated as unconstitutional.

The 4-3 ruling marks the fifth time justices have found the commission’s legislative maps violate a 2015 constitutional amendment designed to prevent gerrymandering.

O’Connor also said a separate, federal three-judge panel has placed her court in a remarkable position by announcing it will force use of the invalid maps unless the state dispute is resolved by Friday.

2 Injured In Crash Just Outside Findlay

Two people were injured in a two-car crash at an intersection just northwest of Findlay.

The crash happened at the intersection of Hancock County Road 140 and Liberty Township Road 95 at around 1:30 Thursday afternoon.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says Dinesh Muramreddy, 22, of Findlay, was driving a Ford Fusion eastbound on Township Road 95 and failed to yield at the stop sign at County Road 140.

His car collided with a Chevy Cruze that was northbound on County Road 140 and being driven by Jonathan Patterson, 19, of North Baltimore.

The impact of the crash sent the Cruze into the field on the northeast corner of the intersection and the Fusion came to rest along the side of County Road 140.

Both Muramreddy and Patterson were taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital for their injuries.

Investigators say impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash.

Investigation Into South Main Street Fire Complete

The Findlay Fire Department’s investigation into the house fire at 824 South Main Street is complete.

Fire Chief Josh Eberle says the official cause is listed as undetermined.

He said there was a significant amount of damage done to the area of origin, making it hard to pinpoint the exact cause.

And when investigators can’t arrive at a specific cause, a fire must be listed as undetermined.

He added that an undetermined designation is not uncommon, as around 40 to 50 percent of fires nationwide annually are listed as such.

Chief Eberle says they had 16 firefighters respond to the May 1st blaze and then called in another six personnel from the previous shift.

The house sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage and the roof collapsed.

The house had not been lived in for a while and no one was injured in the fire.

The house has been turned back over to the owners and it’s unknown what they have in store for it.

Event Helps Children Learn To Process Grief

Area youth will have an opportunity to take part in “Grief Trails,” sponsored by Bridge Home Health & Hospice, a division of Blanchard Valley Health System, in June and July.

“Grief Trails” is a program that allows children, ages six to 12 years old, to learn about the importance of communicating emotions and needs to others during times of grief, while working hands-on with gentle horses.

Two locations and dates will be offered for this year’s program and are as follows:

Lane of Dreams, LLC, located at 2502 East County Road 16, Tiffin, OH, Friday, June 24, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A rain date has been scheduled for Friday, July 8, 2022. Registration for this event is due by June 1, 2022.

Challenged Champions, located at 11913 County Road 6, Ottawa, OH, on Friday, July 15, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration for this event is due by July 1, 2022.

BVHS says although children may appear to be less affected by the death of a loved one, there are many questions, fears and worries as they attempt to make sense of the loss and deal with the changes it creates.

The children will gather with their peers in an encouraging environment and participate in activities that will help them express their feelings, learn effective communication tools and have fun at the same time.

Bereavement coordinator, Kristi Beall, along with trained volunteers, will guide the children through conversation, horseback riding and creating keepsakes.

This year, participants will learn to be “On Safari – Journeying Your Way through Grief.”

Camp activities include arts and crafts, outdoor fun and a butterfly release.

In addition to these traditional camp activities, children participate in grief support activities to gain skills in managing their personal grief.

This event is being offered through Bridge’s Group Special Times Always Remembered (S.T.A.R.) at no cost to the family, with all materials provided.

For more information and/or to request a registration form, call Bridge Bereavement Services at 419-423-5351 or email Kristi Beall, at kbeall@bvhealthsystem.org.

Registration is required.
