Findlay Seeking Candidates For Boards And Commissions

Findlay Mayor Christina Muryn is seeking candidates to serve on various boards and commissions within the City of Findlay for which she makes appointments.

“I am grateful for the individuals who take the time out of their busy schedules to serve their community on boards and commissions. They are an important part of having a successful community,” Muryn said.

“Historically, these appointments are made by the Mayor reaching out to individuals they know would serve the board well and that is fantastic. However, I also want to get more individuals involved. There may be candidates that would serve the community well that I am not aware of or someone interested in a role I would not have thought of them for.”

There are positions available on the following boards and commissions: Blanchard Valley Port Authority, Board of Zoning Appeals, Downtown Design Review Board, Hancock Regional Planning Commission, Parks & Recreation Board and the Revolving Loan Fund Board.

People interested in serving should email the Mayor at cmuryn@findlayohio.com by Wednesday, November 17th, at 5pm with a resume or background about themselves, contact information, and which board or commission they are interested in.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the City of Findlay, Ohio.

The fire did extensive damage to the garage area and caused smoke damage throughout the house.

Nobody was injured in the fire. The cause is under investigation.

Mayor Proclaims Deb Wickerham Day In Findlay

Findlay Mayor Christina Muryn issued a proclamation declaring November 7th, 2021, as Deb Wickerham Day in Findlay.

The mayor is inviting everyone to join with her in thanking Deb for her outstanding commitment to our veterans.

Deb started Flag City Honor Flight in 2010 and they’ve grown to become the Honor Flight hub for, not only northwest Ohio, but also southeast Michigan and some of northeast Indiana.

She says they’ve taken more than 1,200 Veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials.

In December of 2020, Wickerham stepped down as the Executive Director/Flight Director of Flag City Honor Flight.

She will still serve in an advisory role.

“Flag City Honor Flight is part of me and will always be part of me,” Wickerham told WFIN News.

Deb says she feels very comfortable that Flag City Honor Flight will continue to do well in serving Veterans as best they can.

Bob Weinberg took over as Flight Director.

Deb points out that she will still serve in an advisory role and she thanks everyone who has helped make Flag City Honor Flight such a success.

Deb says it was a full-time job and now she has more time to spend with family and her two grandkids who live in Arizona.

MLK Parkway Overpass Reopening On Wednesday

The Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway overpass in Findlay will be reopening on Wednesday.

The City of Findlay has a ribbon-cutting scheduled for 3:30 Wednesday afternoon at Anchor Park.

The city says the overpass will be open before the ribbon-cutting, but it was unclear at exactly what time.

The overpass has been closed since June for a project that raised two intersections and a portion of the roadway so they don’t flood.

The intersection of East Main Cross Street and East Street closed on Monday, July 26th.

In June, Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway closed for the first half of the project.

The first part of the project involved the raising of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway from the MLK bridge to Blanchard Street, including the Clinton Court intersection, and building a new super- elevation turn that ties in to Blanchard Street.

The second half of the project is the raising of the East Main Cross/East Street intersection, which began July 26th.

Findlay City Engineer Jeremy Kalb says the project will ensure that when we get the next really bad flood, the intersection will not get covered with water, and emergency vehicles will still be able to utilize the roadway.

New Law Allows Ohioans To Legally Set Off Fireworks On Certain Holidays

Beginning on July, 1st 2022 it will be legal to set off  fireworks in Ohio, on certain days.

The bill signed by Governor DeWine allows Ohioans to set off fireworks on select holidays.

The law limits days for setting off fireworks to several holidays, including New Year’s Day, Memorial Day weekend and days on and around the Fourth of July.

The legislation also removes a long-ignored legal loophole that allows people to buy fireworks but not set them off in the state.

The law also gives local governments the power to control or ban fireworks.

The governor vetoed a similar measure in July.

New Program To Help Ohioans With The High Cost Of Adoption

In conjunction with National Adoption Month, Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague, of Findlay, has announced the launch of Family Forward – a program designed to provide financial relief to families managing the high cost of the adoption process.

“Far too often, the rising costs of adoption deter hard-working Ohioans from growing their families,” Sprague said.

“With Family Forward, we can relieve some of that financial stress and allow prospective parents to focus on the excitement of bringing a child into their home. Through this effort, we look forward to assisting Ohio’s families during one of the most important times in their lives.”

Today in Ohio, prospective parents navigating the adoption process face costs ranging from $10,000 to over $50,000.

Family Forward provides financial relief through a linked deposit program administered by the Ohio Treasurer’s office.

Under the program, individuals or families seeking to adopt may be eligible for reduced interest loans that can be used for qualified adoption expenses up to $50,000.

Sprague and State Representative Jon Cross were on with WFIN’s Chris Oaks to talk about the program.

Qualified expenses include (but are not limited to) adoption agency expenses, court expenses and fees, expenses incurred on behalf of the birth mother, health and psychological examination fees, home studies, and travel.

Loan applicants will work with a lending institution to apply for a loan through Family Forward.

Once the loan is approved, the Treasurer’s office deposits funds with the lending institution at a below market rate.

The lending institution then passes the interest savings on to the borrowers via a reduced interest rate.

For more information on the initial participating lending institutions and how to get started, visit www.ohiotreasurer.gov/familyforward.

Great Scot Makes Donation To Family Resource Center

Great Scot recently hosted local mental health organizations for their first ever “Nourish Your Mind Day” event at several of their locations.

Family Resource Center was on-site at both Findlay Great Scot locations, as well as a Chief’s Market location in Lima.

Some great discussions were had with customers about the importance of self-care, and information was handed out about the local mental health and substance use disorder services that are available.

As the event was wrapping up, Family Resource Center was surprised with a donation of $10,000 from Great Scot as an investment in the continued work Family Resource Center does to improve the mental wellness of youth, families, and individuals in the communities they serve.

Family Resource Center says events like the one hosted by Great Scot are important in helping to normalize talking about mental health topics.
