ODOT Message Boards Warn About Not Buckling Up

The Ohio Department of Transportation wasn’t pulling any punches with one of its message boards over the 4th of July weekend.

The sign read “Buckle Up, Windshields Hurt.”

ODOT said, they hate to be so blunt, but not buckling up can result in being ejected from your vehicle in a crash, which almost always results in death.

ODOT says there have been around 25,000 crashes this year in Ohio involving unbuckled motorists.

Another message board over the 4th of July weekend read “Fireworks Are Bright, Driving Drunk Is Not.”

Governor Signs Law Increasing Penalties For Hazing

Governor DeWine has signed Collin’s Law, which increases penalties for hazing in Ohio.

Under the new law, penalties will be elevated from 4th degree to 2nd degree misdemeanors, and hazing involving forced consumption of drugs or alcohol that seriously harms someone would be a third-degree felony punishable with prison time.

The law is named after Collin Wiant of Dublin, Ohio who died from a hazing incident at a fraternity house at Ohio University in 2018.

The measure also requires that college campuses provide anti-hazing training and online information about reported hazing violations.

Shari Foltz, the mother of Stone Foltz, who died in a hazing incident at Bowling Green State University in March, said the new law is a step in the right direction.

“We are not done, we will continue to fight. Our fight is zero tolerance to prevent this from happening.”

She said she made a promise to Stone in the hospital that they would keep fighting and not allow this to happen to anyone else.

Governor Sending National Guard, OSHP To Texas Border

Governor DeWine has authorized a contingent from the Ohio State Highway Patrol to respond to Texas to assist local law enforcement with border surveillance.

The authorization is in response to a request for assistance from Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

A total of 14 OSHP troopers and supervisors will travel to Texas later this week.

During this two-week assignment, the OSHP will not be tasked with making arrests.

Last week, Governor DeWine approved the deployment of 185 members of the Ohio Army National Guard to Texas to provide non-law enforcement support to the United States Custom and Border Protection.

The activation was made at the request of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Guard Bureau.

The service members will be deployed on federal Title 10 status in late 2021.

Approximately 115 members of the Ohio National Guard’s 1484th Transportation Company were previously deployed to support the Southwest Border operations at the request of DHS and NGB.

Those soldiers currently remain on active duty.
