Marathon Reports Second Quarter Results

Marathon Petroleum had a dismal second quarter thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company on Monday reported a net income of $9 million in the second quarter of 2020.

That $9 million compares to $1.1 billion in net income for the second quarter of last year.

“Our second quarter results reflect a full three months of the challenges COVID has created for our business,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Hennigan.

“We began April with demand at historic lows. Despite seeing some recovery during the quarter, demand for our products and services continues to be significantly depressed, particularly across the West Coast and Midwest.”

“In response, we are executing on the actions we announced in May and are advancing the three strategic priorities which lay the foundation for our long-term success. First, we strengthened the competitive position of our assets with the decision to indefinitely idle our Gallup and Martinez refineries, and are evaluating strategic repositioning possibilities for Martinez. Second, we began implementing commercial strategy changes and I’ve been encouraged by the team’s quick progress. And third, we lowered our capital spending and tightly managed our operating expenses. I’m confident we will meet the $950 million expense reduction target we previously announced for 2020. We are also implementing plans to structurally lower costs in 2021 and beyond.”

Marathon announced on Sunday that it was selling its Speedway gas stations to 7-Eleven.

Findlay PD Offering Virtual National Night Out Activities

The Findlay Police Department is inviting families to take part in virtual National Night Out activities.

National Night Out was canceled this year due to the pandemic, but the police department says kids can still have some fun and win some prizes.

The first activity is designing your own police uniform and patch.

At the end of the week, parents can take a picture of their youngster with the completed activities and post to, or private message to the police department’s Facebook page for a chance to win prizes, including a new bicycle. Winners will be selected at random.

The police department is also releasing “Behind the Badge: Getting to Know Your Officers” videos for National Night Out.

New Police Chief Robert Ring is featured in the first video.

National Night Out is a nationwide campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer.

Cooper Tire Reports Second Quarter Results

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company posted some rough second quarter numbers thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

The company reported on Monday that it had a second quarter net loss of $6 million.

In the same quarter last year the company posted a net income of $9 million.

Net sales in the second quarter decreased to $496 million, a drop of 26.9 percent.

“As anticipated, the global pandemic significantly impacted our results in the second quarter. However, our performance materially exceeded our expectations,” said President & Chief Executive Officer Brad Hughes.

“I want to thank our employees around the globe for stepping up during this challenging and unprecedented time,” he added.

Lima Company Reunion Canceled Amid Pandemic

(ONN) – An Ohio-based Marine company among the hardest-hit of the war in Iraq has canceled a 15-year reunion amid coronavirus restrictions.

The Marines and families of the Lima Company 2005 deployment say they still have their memories.

Some are seared in, such as the roadside bomb explosion that killed 15 men on August 3rd that year.

There are also poignant memories, such as Jason Dominguez recalling his last conversation with Sgt. David Kreuter, who was showing off a photo of his new son during their security watch.

Kreuter was killed the next day.

Dominguez says he remembers the fallen Marines and thinks about choosing to live a life “worthy of their sacrifice.”

A traveling memorial honoring the Lima Company Marines who were killed came to Findlay last year.

Marathon Selling Speedway Gas Stations To 7-Eleven

Marathon Petroleum Corporation has announced that it will be selling its Speedway gas stations to 7-Eleven.

Marathon says the $21 billion all-cash deal establishes a relationship with 7-Eleven anchored by long-term fuel supply agreements for approximately 7.7 billion gallons per year with additional growth opportunities also possible.

“This transaction marks a milestone on the strategic priorities we outlined earlier this year,” said Michael J. Hennigan, president and chief executive officer.

“Our announcement crystalizes the significant value of the Speedway business, creates certainty around value realization and delivers on our commitment to unlock the value of our assets. At the same time, the establishment of a long-term strategic relationship with 7-Eleven creates opportunities to improve our commercial performance.”

7-Eleven is a wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Japanese retail company Seven & i Holdings.

There are nearly 4,000 Speedway gas stations in 36 states.

5 Injured In Crashes That Shut Down Interstate 75

Several people were injured in back to back crashes on Interstate 75 a little north of the Bluffton exit (State Route 103).

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the first crash happened at around 11:30 Saturday morning.

A Honda Civic that was northbound failed to maintain control in the rainy conditions and went off the left side of the highway and crashed into the median cable barrier.

The Civic then came to rest in the left lane of Interstate 75 northbound.

A few minutes later the highway patrol says a Dodge Journey changed lanes to avoid the Civic and was struck by a Toyota Camry.

The highway patrol says the driver of the Civic and the two people in the Journey were transported to Blanchard Valley Hospital for their injuries.

Two people in the Camry were treated on the scene for minor injuries.

The patrol says the driver of the Civic was cited for failure to maintain control.

And the driver of the Journey was ticketed for a turn signal violation and driving without a valid license.

The crash shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 for about an hour.

Community Helps Findlay Woman Celebrate 107th Birthday

Family, friends and total strangers took part in a drive-by parade at The Heritage Saturday morning to wish Mary Eleanor Ronez a happy 107th birthday.

Her granddaughter Valerie says Eleanor loved the surprise, especially the part when Dietsch Brothers drove by and dropped off a three-pound box of assorted creams, which has about 107 pieces of candy.

Valerie says they wanted to do something neat for Eleanor’s 107th and thanks everyone who participated in her special day.

Her grandson, who is a volunteer firefighter in Vanlue, drove their grass truck in the parade and some Findlay police cruisers also drove by.

We met Eleanor last year when she turned 106, and she said the secret to living a long life was no drinking, smoking or swearing.

Happy Birthday Eleanor!
