(ONN) – A central Ohioan was honored by President Trump during the president’s Memorial Day speech in Baltimore.

President Trump told the story of Jim Krebs, of Sunbury, and the sacrifice he and his twin brother Jack made during the Battle of the Bulge.

“Together they took out four enemy tanks, two machine gun nests and another position that was loaded up with mortars,” the President said in the video below.

Jim’s brother Jack was mortally wounded during the battle and Jim fought on to victory and came back to the U.S. and lived a long life.

Jim Krebs died in April at the age of 94.

His grandsons, Andy and Ron, were on hand in Baltimore to be recognized in his honor.

The Hancock Leadership Class of 2020 class project is designed to get kids more active by bringing the activities to them.

Y on the Fly is a mobile YMCA unit that will take activities to underserved children and neighborhoods in Findlay and Hancock County.

“This unit will be able to go to neighborhoods and schools and communities and offer services to children who may not traditionally have been able to have those services,” said Erin Schwiebert, who works at Marathon Petroleum and is a member of the leadership class.

She says Hancock Leadership had several different organizations come to them with proposals but the Y on the Fly project really stood out.

“We really felt strongly about the Y on the Fly because we felt like being able to offer services to children who may not have access to those things is incredibly important.”

She says the van will be filled with activities, supplies and snacks, all for free.

“The 2020 Hancock Leadership class and the YMCA believe that every child deserves a healthy, vibrant lifestyle where they can learn and grow in a safe environment.”

She says Y on the Fly will be launching in the middle of June and kids will be able to enjoy the activities while still adhering to social distancing guidelines.

While Findlay’s traditional Memorial Day Parade was canceled due to the pandemic, the city still was able to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

The city put together a Memorial Day Program that was available online and on the radio on Memorial Day.

The program, which you can watch below, included a memorial service, a wreath-laying, the playing of TAPS, a military salute, the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance as well as a message from Mayor Christina Muryn.

The program ended with a community-wide moment of silence which concluded with the sounding of the Hancock County weather sirens and sirens from emergency vehicles.

(ONN) – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says wearing masks while in public during the coronavirus pandemic should not be a political issue.

DeWine was reacting on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday to North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum’s call for support and encouragement for those wearing masks since they may be protecting someone vulnerable to the virus.

DeWine called those comments “spot on” and said “this is one time when we truly are all in this together.”

DeWine earlier issued an order for Ohioans to wear masks while shopping in stores but then reversed himself, calling the order “a bridge too far.”

A graduation parade for the Arlington Schools Class of 2020 made its way through the village on Sunday, which would’ve been the day of their traditional graduation.

Graduates waved to people while slowly riding by, and one even tossed water balloons at people on what was a very warm afternoon.

We spoke with Jenn Rossman after the car with her son, Morgan, went by.

She says it was really nice to see so many people in town come out to support the graduates.

She says Morgan’s been taking it all in stride but he has been bothered about missing the “final” things.

“Like the final choir concert and the awards assemblies and just spending those last weeks with kids that he’s gone to school with, some of them, since pre-school.”

Jenn says Morgan will be attending college at Anderson University in Indiana.

The Marathon Center for the Performing Arts is introducing a Drive-In Concert Series to benefit the center.

MCPA says the concert series will feature live music by three of Findlay’s most popular bands projected onto a larger-than-life outside screen and enjoyed from the comfort of your car in the parking lot.

The series will feature performances by The Reunion Band, 12til2 and Tongue n’ Groove.

The first show is Saturday, June 13th.

The Findlay Police Department says the Chase Bank on Tiffin Avenue was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday.

Police say a man entered the bank at around 12:30 Saturday afternoon, displayed a handgun and demanded money.

The teller complied and turned over an undisclosed amount of money to the suspect.

The suspect was last seen running in a southwest direction from the bank through the parking lots.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

Police say the suspect was described as a skinny, white male in his late twenties or early thirties.

He was wearing blue jeans, a blue hooded sweatshirt and a black face mask.

He was believed to be around five feet nine to five feet ten inches tall.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Anyone with information on the robbery is urged to contact the Findlay Police Department at 419-424-7150.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is collaborating with other agencies to keep the roadways safe over the Memorial Day Weekend.

Last year in Ohio, 15 people were killed in 12 fatal crashes during the Memorial Day Weekend.

Of those fatalities, eight were OVI-related and three were unbelted.

Law enforcement officers are also reminding motorists to drive sober.

“As traffic counts begin to rise with businesses reopening and travel increasing, we need your help in renewing the focus on traffic safety,” said Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol

“We all have a responsibility to protect the safety of every person in Ohio including those using Ohio’s roadways.”

The Hancock Park District’s Zonta Landing Boat Rentals opens on Saturday, May 23rd.

Launch summer fun at Hancock Park District’s (HPD) Zonta Landing Boat Rentals at the Riverside Park Waterfront at 231 McManness Avenue. The boat livery rents canoes and kayaks beginning Memorial Day weekend on May 23 through Labor Day, on weekends and holidays from 1 to 7 p.m.

The standard boat rental fee is $5 per ½ hour for canoes and kayaks. The Special Float Trip Option is $20 per canoe and $10 per solo kayak for approximately two hours. Float trips begin and end at Zonta Landing. Boating is limited to an area upstream past the Findlay Country Club golf course, Eastpoint Area, and Vogelsong Conservation Area to State Route 568/Sandusky Street Bridge and back.

Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the need for safety precautions, new procedures are in place for boat rentals:

1. When approaching the boathouse from the trail, stop at the designated location and wait to be called by the attendant. Seven persons to a group is the maximum.

2. Rental groups are expected to practice social distancing while waiting. Social distance means at least six feet apart, unless group members live together.

3. Wearing masks while in line and throughout the transaction process is recommended.

4. Exact payment in the form of cash or a check made payable to the Hancock Park District is preferred so that less cash handling can occur and so that the transaction will be faster.

5. After making payment and receiving paddles and personal floatation devices, renters can take the stairs down to the beach area and dock where the boats await. To further promote social distancing, boaters are expected to enter and exit boats without assistance. However, assistance will be provided upon request.

6. Personal flotation devices should be on and properly fastened before entering the dock and boats.

7. When the float trip is over, exit the dock, leave paddles and personal floatation devices on the beach, and exit the beach area to the left by walking up the ramp to further promote social distancing and to maintain the one-way in, one-way out pedestrian traffic pattern.

8. The boathouse and beach area will be controlled to the extent possible so that only boat rental patrons are in the area.

9. Boats, paddles, and personal floatation devices will be cleaned and disinfected before and after each use.

The rental process is, by design, slower and more deliberate than the normal process. Minimizing the number of persons gathered and promoting social distancing are the overarching safety precautions being applied with the well-being of employees and patrons in mind. A Findlay High School student is using music to express her feelings about the school year coming to a sudden end.

Emma Parsell wrote and performed the song “Saying Goodbye” which you can hear below.

Emma, pictured below, says the song is a reminder to live in the moment and to not take anything for granted.

“You should just really appreciate all the little moments in life and not take anything for granted because you never know when everything might come crashing to a halt.”

FHS staff member Nelda Benavidez created a video to go with the song for the Class of 2020 which you can see below.

Findlay High School will be having a virtual graduation ceremony Saturday morning at 10.
