UF Black Student Union Celebrating 50th Anniversary With Black Tie Event

(WFIN) – The University of Findlay’s Black Student Union will have its 50th anniversary during Homecoming weekend.

To celebrate the anniversary the BSU is having a Black Tie Affair and worship service.

This includes an open house featuring BSU photos and correspondence from past years.

The event will be on September 27 from 7:30 to 9 pm at the Buford Center for Diversity and Service.

Findlay Firefighters Quickly Knock Down Fire At Recycling Business

Findlay firefighters made quick work of a fire at a recycling center.

The fire at Variety Recycling started at around 10 a.m. Wednesday and was burning pretty good when firefighters were called.

The fire sent some black smoke into the sky that could be seen from quite a distance away for several minutes.

They arrived at the business on Crystal Avenue and quickly got the fire under control and put it out.

No word on how it started.

 

Ohio Medical Board Rejects Medical Marijuana For Anxiety, Autism

(ONN) – Officials have decided on whether to add two more qualifying conditions for medical marijuana use in Ohio.

There are 21 qualifying conditions for using medical marijuana in Ohio.

An appeal to add two more to the list was considered this week.

The Ohio State Medical Board has decided that doctors cannot treat anxiety or autism with medical marijuana.

According to the Dispatch, the board voted against the idea, saying there have not been enough clinical trials or evidence to add those two ailments to the list of qualifying conditions.

The next open period to consider adding qualifying conditions is in November of next year.

Traveling Memorial In Findlay Brings Attention To Veteran Suicide Epidemic

A traveling memorial that honors the sacrifice of the Ohio marine reserve unit Lima Company in the Global War on Terror is also bringing attention to the epidemic of veteran suicide.

Corporal Mike Strahle says a sculpture called Silent Battle has really become one of their main focuses.

“We’re still gonna travel the country honoring service, but we have a very specific focus on the veteran suicide issue right now, and we’re glad to take up arms in that fight.”

Strahle lost 23 of his fellow Lima Company marines in 2005 and says the first step to healing is knowing that they are not alone.

Veterans are encouraged to touch the sculpture to receive healing love and prayers from it and from people who have left messages on dog tags at the sculpture.

You can see the sculpture, along with the rest of the tribute to Lima Company called “Eyes of Freedom: Lima Company Memorial” at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts through Saturday.

Man Sentenced To Prison For Armed Robbery At Findlay Restaurant

A Findlay man is heading to prison for an armed robbery at a restaurant and a separate felony offense.

The Courier is reporting that Deven J. Tackett, 26, was sentenced to 2 and a half years in prison for robbing Keith’s Dugout and 10 months for misuse of credit cards.

The sentences will be served concurrently.

The paper is reporting that Danny R. Scarberry Jr., 52, of Findlay, was indicted over the summer for aggravated robbery in connection with the October 2015 robbery at Keith’s Dugout.

Police said the crime was committed by two men, one of whom had a hatchet and the other a gun.

Ohio State University’s Trademark Application For “The” Denied

Federal officials say The Ohio State University can not trademark “The.”

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has turned down the university’s request to trademark “The” in conjunction with the university’s name on items marketed for sale such as t-shirts, baseball caps and hats.

Ohio State acknowledged the patent office’s decision and said, “we are reviewing our options and have six months to respond.”

Ohio State submitted the application for the trademark in August.

Lebron James’ ‘Taco Tuesday’ trademark application was also denied.

OH! FAME Working With National Organization

(WFIN) – OH! FAME has been invited to work on the expansion of FAME USA.

FAME is a manufacturing program that allows students to take classes in advanced manufacturing while also getting hands-on experience at a local business.

The expansion of the program is happening because FAME USA is partnering with the National Association of Manufacturers.

Raise The Bar Hancock County spearheaded OH! FAME in Hancock County. They said they will have more details about the expansion in the coming weeks.

Man Arrested For Leading Police On A Chase Through Findlay

(WFIN) – Findlay police officers chased a man through the city after responding to a call of a man driving through a yard at Family Resource Center and threatening to harm people.

Officers say 52-year-old David Luth drove south down North Main Street when officers arrived and refused to pull over.

The pursuit went through the school zones at Glenwood Middle School and the University of Findlay where Luth allegedly hit speeds over 60 mph.

Officers say Luth drove over a curb and into a residential yard on Frazer Street where he came to a stop.

Luth was charged with fleeing and eluding and is being held in the Hancock County Justice Center until he can be taken to a psychiatric hospital for further evaluation.

Nuns On Their Way To Teach At Findlay Catholic School Next Year

(WFIN) – St. Michael the Archangel Church will have nuns join them for school next year.

4 nuns from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist are coming to Findlay to help teach students.

This is the first time nuns have come to the parish in about 50 years.

To make room for the nuns, St. Michael the Archangel School officials say they will demolish 3 rental houses to build a convent in the next month or two.

Traveling Memorial In Findlay Honors Ohio Marines Killed In The War On Terror

On this anniversary of 9/11, a traveling memorial in Findlay is honoring the members of an Ohio marine reserve unit who died in the global war on terrorism.

The “Eyes of Freedom: Lima Company Memorial” salutes the 23 members of the company who were killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005.

The memorial includes life-sized portraits of the marines.

You can see the memorial now through Saturday at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts.
