Findlay Recognized For Childhood Obesity Prevention Efforts, Awarded Grant

The City of Findlay has been awarded the U.S. Conference of Mayor’s 2019 Childhood Obesity Prevention Award.

The award comes with a $100,000 grant that the city will use to help keep kids more active in the winter months.

“We’re excited to be able to provide additional opportunities, especially in those cold months when it’s not as easy to be active,” said Mayor Christina Muryn.

As kids were playing on an obstacle course at Bernard Park that the city set up, Recreation Supervisor Lisa Mansfield said it doesn’t matter what activity it is, kids just need to be more active.

“Whether it’s going back to old school games like kickball or wiffle ball that we all did as kids on the playground and at parks, or tennis and swimming activities.”

Mayor Muryn says the city will use the grant money to increase access to physical activity for children by expanding the city’s “Keep Active, Keep Healthy” program to offer more programs throughout the year.

Governor Wants To Add Warrants, Protective Orders To Background Checks For Guns

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine wants information about outstanding warrants to be included on background checks for gun purchases.

DeWine says Innovate Ohio would create a portal where information on warrants and protective orders could be funneled to state and federal databases used in background checks.

DeWine says he wants the Ohio General Assembly to mandate agencies to enter warrants into the system within 48-hours of being issued.

Meantime, two former Ohio governors are lending their support to a new background check proposal by Governor DeWine.

Republican Bob Taft who was governor from 1999 to 2007 and Democrat Ted Strickland who served from 2007 to 2011 spoke at the Columbus Metropolitan Club about DeWine’s new plan.

Both men tried during their terms to address gun control with Taft unsuccessfully attempting to enact a safe-storage law.

Strickland said he sent DeWine a text message of support after the governor’s 17-point plan was first unveiled on August 6th.

Highway Patrol K-9 Knows When To Work And When To Just Be A Dog

A four-legged member of the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Findlay is proving to be a very valuable asset.

Trooper Matthew Manly says he’s had his K-9, Boy, for three years now.

“He’s really starting to grow and to come into his body, we refer to him now as a veteran because he’s been around for a couple of years. He’s been deployed on the side of the road and has multiple seizures under his belt.”

He says, just last summer Boy was instrumental in locating 165 pounds of cocaine in a vehicle on the Ohio Turnpike.

“That was a very large and significant seizure, you just don’t see that anymore where they take large amounts like that over the turnpike,” Manly said.

“So, to see a seizure of that magnitude that we haven’t seen in years was really cool to be a part of for me and him (Boy) as well.”

Manly says Boy is a great partner and has a good temperament.

“He realizes when I put my uniform on and we get in the Tahoe that it’s time to go to work, but when I take him home he knows how to take that work hat off and just be a dog.”

Since National Dog Day was this week, the patrol created the Dapper Dog contest where people can vote for their favorite highway patrol K-9.

The Findlay Post has three K-9s. Boy, Bo and Gaban.
