Arcadia Puts Renewal Levy In Front Of District Voters

Residents in the Arcadia school district will see a renewal levy on the ballot next Tuesday. Superintendent Bruce Kidder says the levy raises more than $800,000 a year for operations. That includes costs like transportation, building maintenance, and teacher salaries.

Kidder says the levy is not paying for the construction of new classrooms at the school. The district is paying for that work with money already set aside for the project.

Voters in the Arcadia district first approved the operations levy in 2004. They last renewed it in 2014.

Special Event Next Week Teaches Kids About In Demand Jobs In Ohio

The Children’s Museum of Findlay is hosting a special event to kick off “Ohio In Demand Jobs Week”. There will be exhibits that feature guests doing an activity to share what they do. Children will have jobs passports to take with them as they learn about the many jobs available. There is a prize for getting a stamp at each location.

The event will be this coming Monday from 5 – 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Area Levy Campaigns Release Finance Reports

Area levy campaigns recently issued their finance reports. They show the Blanchard Valley Center renewal levy received more than $5,000 since its last report. It carried forward a balance of more than $18,000 and had spent more than $8,000 on efforts to pass a renewal issue.

The campaign for a building issue in the Liberty-Benton school district brought in more than $6,000 in contributions. They had spent roughly $2,500 of that in the last reporting period.

Semi Crash Reported North Of Ottawa Tuesday

5/1/19 – 6:45 A.M.

A semi got stuck on railroad tracks north of Ottawa Tuesday. The Lima News reports the incident happened on State Route 65 around 11 a.m.

76-year-old Mark Doster of Chicago slid on the wet road, causing his semi to go off the road and land on the tracks. The crash closed the highway for about an hour.

Doster was not hurt in the crash.

Cooper Tire Profits Decline In First Quarter

Cooper Tire & Rubber cited higher expenses for pensions and post-retirement benefits for a decline in profits during the first quarter of the year. Cooper reported $7 million in profits for the first three months of 2019. That’s down 16 percent compared to the same time frame in 2018.

Sales increased by nearly 3 percent to $619 million. Operating profit was relatively flat compared to the first quarter of 2018, but exceeded company expectations. In a statement, Cooper CEO Brad Hughes said: “Operating profit in the first quarter was higher than we expected due to stronger than anticipated performance in North America and Asia.”

Lt. Governor Jon Husted Talks Workforce Development In Findlay

Lt. Governor Jon Husted stopped in Findlay to talk about workforce development Tuesday. Speaking to the Courier editorial board, Husted said it’s the biggest issue facing businesses in the state right now…

Husted said the state is also looking at elevating the number of career credentials coming out of high school. The state would help make sure teachers are trained to teach things like welding under the proposal.

Two Teens Sentenced For Role In Home Invasion

Two of the teenagers involved in a Hancock County home invasion are heading to prison. 19-year-old Deven Blythe of Findlay will spend four years in prison for a kidnapping conviction. He’ll serve another 11 months for receiving stolen property. 18-year-old Rodney Williams Jr. of Findlay will spend a total of four years behind bars for convictions on the same charges.

The Hancock County grand jury indicted Blythe and Williams along with 18-year-old Hunter Kelbley of Upper Sandusky, 19-year-old Devin Kerr of Bowling Green, and 18-year-old Alexandra Ayala of Dunkirk back in January.

Ayala pleaded guilty last Wednesday to an aggravated burglary charge with an amended specification and receiving stolen property. Kelbley received a four-year prison sentence in March. Kerr is set for sentencing on May 20th.
