Ottawa Man Arrested After Making Threats At Truck Stop

5/20/19 – 5:01 A.M.

A man allegedly making threats at the Pilot truck stop on State Route 613 near Van Buren is in custody today. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to the business around 7 a.m. Sunday. A caller said 33-year-old Joseph Saldana was in an SUV in the parking lot and might have a gun.

The first deputy to arrive saw Saldana hit another car with his SUV. He then ran away into a nearby “woody thicket.” K-9 officer Charlie chased Saldana down and helped bring him into custody. Deputies say Saldana had two weapons in his SUV, including a stolen handgun. He also allegedly had a large amount of illegal narcotics.

Saldana faces charges of possession of drugs, aggravated menacing, and failure to comply with a police officer among several others.

Suicides Rates On The Rise

Suicide rates across Ohio are on the rise and that includes Hancock County. That’s according to NAMI Hancock County Executive Director Eric McKee…

McKee adds that this is affecting more men than women, with about 4 times as many men committing suicide than women. He said that they are worked both at the state and local levels to make a plan to raise education and provide services to prevent suicide.

He added that the plans also include getting processes and policies in place to help people. McKee said one such program they are looking at is the Man Therapy program. McKee explained that this is a successful program using humor to get men to talk about hard issues like depression, divorce, and anxiety.

Hanco EMS Earns State Award

Hanco EMS earned an EMS Star of Life Award. The award recognizes exceptional work, life-saving efforts, and patient care. Hanco EMS was one of nine organizations in Ohio to earn the recognition this year. There 60 total applicants.

They will be presented the award during the EMS Star of Life Awards Ceremony on May 22 in Columbus. The ceremony will be streamed live for the public at ems.ohio.gov on the day of the event.

Ralphie’s Opening Restaurant In Kenton

A northwest Ohio-based chain of sports bars is planning a new location in Kenton. WKTN radio reports Ralphie’s will open in the former Henry’s location on the city’s north side. A Ralphie’s representative says they’ll start renovations soon and should open by this fall.

The new location will be the eighth Ralphie’s restaurant.

BGSU Student Charged In Extortion Case

5/17/19 – 6:47 A.M.

A student at Bowling Green State University is facing charges stemming from an incident in one of the college’s dorms. The Sentinel-Tribune reports the Wood County grand jury indicted 20-year old Diaba Diane of Toledo on counts of abduction, extortion, and intimidation of an attorney, victim, or witness in a criminal case.

Investigators say Diane and three others showed up in the residence hall and told the victim they weren’t leaving until they were paid what they were owed. The group allegedly wanted to force the victim to go to Kroger to get them money.

Two other members of the group who are not students at the University are also facing charges in the case.

Two Men Indicted In BG Waffle House Attack

5/17/19 – 6:38 A.M.

The Wood County grand jury has indicted two men accused of a hate crime in Bowling Green. Media partner WTOL 11 reports 22-year-old Dick Jacob and 21-year-old Zachary Keller face felonious assault and ethnic intimidation charges. Investigators say the men attacked two teenagers at the Waffle House in Bowling Green in late March.

Police say Keller and Jacob made racial slurs toward the victims while in the restaurant. The men then allegedly attacked the teens as they left.

Vanlue, Arcadia To Hold High School Graduation Ceremonies This Weekend

5/17/19 – 5:24 A.M.

High school graduation season starts this weekend in Hancock County. Things get started Saturday night in Vanlue. Nine students will graduate from the high school during a 7 p.m. ceremony in the school’s auditorium.

Arcadia High School is holding its commencement ceremony Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the gym. There are 47 students in Arcadia’s graduating class this year.

Early Morning Fire Damages Barn Near Gilboa

5/17/19 – 5:18 A.M.

Fire damaged a barn in Putnam County early this morning. Firefighters responded to the blaze southeast of Gilboa in the 11000 block of Road 1-K around 1:30 a.m.

McComb firefighters were called in for help about an hour later. They stated on scene until around 4 a.m.

McComb Great Scot Location Closing

5/17/19 – 5:12 A.M.

The Great Scot location in McComb is closing its doors after today. The move comes after parent company Fresh Encounter changed the store from a full grocery store to a convenience store in 2018. Store manager Theresa Bryan says most McComb residents work in Findlay and buy their groceries in the city.

Fresh Encounter officials have not commented on the store closing.
