“Survivorman” Star Shares Tips For Emergency Preparedness

Les Stroud, star of the show “Survivorman”, joined us on WFIN to talk about being prepared for emergencies. He stressed that it is important to make sure you have an emergency kit.

Stroud added that one thing you can do is to make sure your house is ready to take on any bad weather.

He said you can also look into getting a home generator. He explained that this can help you but also give your neighborhood hope in a bad situation by providing a warm, safe place with power.

 

Juneteenth Celebration Scheduled To Celebrate The Ending Of Slavery

There is going to be a Juneteenth celebration featuring a brown bag luncheon in June. Visit Findlay Community Relations and Development Manager Danielle Wilkin explained that Juneteenth celebrates the freeing of slaves.

The celebration will be at the University of Findlay Alumni Memorial Building on June 19. It will kick off at noon with the luncheon featuring Underground Railroad expert Cathy Nelson and will last until 8 p.m. Wilkin said that there will be plenty of activities for families to take part in throughout the day as well.

Bluffton Woman Pleads Guilty To Manufacturing Drugs, Gets Four Years

A Bluffton woman is heading to prison for making meth. The Lima News reports that 54-year-old Kimberly Dennard was sentenced to four years in prison. The indictment alleges that Dennard was making the drugs in her apartment, which is close to Bluffton High School. Dennard denies that, saying that she would go to remote rural locations to make the drug.

Dennard entered a plea deal with prosecutors where she pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony count of the illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs. Prosecutors dismissed a first-degree felony in exchange for the deal.

More Than Three Pounds Of Pot Found In Findlay Man’s Car

The State Highway Patrol arrested a Findlay man following a traffic stop on I-75 in Wood County last week. A release from the patrol says troopers pulled over 25-year-old Brandon Harris for a headlight violation around 12:15 a.m. on May 21st.

The trooper says he smelled raw marijuana in the car while talking to the people inside. Further investigation led to the discovery of more than three pounds of marijuana.

Harris faces charges of possession and trafficking marijuana.

North Baltimore Police Department Warns Of Phone Scam

The North Baltimore Police Department wants residents to be aware of a phone scam. Someone is apparently calling people and claiming they are raising money for the police department. Officials say they are not collecting money for any fundraiser.

You’re advised not to give any personal information to the callers, and to hang up on them.

One Car Crash Injures Findlay Man

5/31/19 – 6:48 A.M.

A one-car crash injured a Findlay man Thursday afternoon. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 139 and Portage Township Road 109.

35-year-old Kevin Ziegler was driving west on Road 109 when he didn’t stop at a stop sign at the intersection and hit a utility pole on the west side of the road. Ziegler went to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Thursday Marked Final Day Of Classes Ever For St. Wendelin In Fostoria

The doors have closed for good at St. Wendelin Catholic School in Fostoria. Thursday marked the final day of classes. St. Wendelin officials announced in January they would close the school at the end of this academic year. Declining enrollment, limited financial resources, and increasing costs led to the decision.

St. Wendelin closed its high school in 2017.

Leipsic Robbery Suspects Appear In Court

5/31/19 – 5:28 A.M.

The three men accused of robbing a Leipsic restaurant on May 21st made their first court appearances Thursday. The Lima News reports 22-year-old Jordan Nieto, 19-year-old Thomas Miles, and 22-year-old Mike Pardo all waived their right to a pre-trial hearing. A grand jury will review the case on June 19th.

The Leipsic Police Department says one of the men took money from the cash register at Mi Familia Restaurant around 7:30 p.m. on May 21. The manager chased the man, who escaped in a car. Officer Scott Harshman caught up with the car on Road 5, leading to a chase that hit speeds of more than 100 miles per hour before coming to an end in a field in Henry County.

Free Summer Lunch Program For Kids Starts Monday

5/31/19 – 5:19 A.M.

A free summer lunch program for students starts again on Monday. Findlay City Schools and the Hancock County Family and Children First Council are partnering again for the effort. The free lunches run from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Glenwood Middle School Monday through Friday through August 2nd.

The lunches are also available for anyone over 18 that a state or local educational agency deems to have a mental or physical disability, and who take part during the school year in a public or private nonprofit school program. Adults can buy lunch at a reduced rate of $3.25.

The lunch program also offers educational activities.

Downtown Demolition Project Approved

5/31/19 – 5:10 A.M.

The Hancock County commissioners have awarded a contract to ALL Excavating and Demolition of McComb to tear down two buildings on North Main Street in Findlay. The company submitted a low bid of just under $60,000 for the project.

The demolition is part of flood-reduction efforts near the Blanchard River. The vacant buildings at 130 and 136 North Main Street once housed the former Karl Kuhlman body shop and B & T’s Asian Market.

The contract says demolition has to finish by the end of July.
