Putnam County is moving recycling operations to a larger building. The Lima News reports recycling center supervisor Joe Hohlbein updated the county commissioners on operations Thursday. Holbein says they are moving to a larger processing building at the county fairgrounds. Recycling drop off locations are not changing.
Currently, the county has to take recycling containers six miles out of Ottawa to dump them in an open top container. After that, they bring the container back to the Ag Annex building. With the new location, trucks will dump recycling materials directly in the building.
The county is also hiring two full-time employees to help with the effort.
The Hancock County Commissioners learned more about a diabetes prevention program for county employees Thursday. Hancock Public Health commissioners Karim Baroudi says the county is taking part in PreventT2 to help employees make lifestyle changes. Baroudi says the changes can help prevent or delay the development of Type 2 diabetes.
Employees can get a prediabetes screening through a questionnaire or through a blood draw. Those who need help will work with a “lifestyle coach” to improve nutrition and exercise.
A grant from the Hancock County Community Foundation is covering the majority of the cost.
Candida Auris is a multi-drug resistant fungus that’s made national headlines. Hancock Public Health’s Chad Masters explained that the fungus has been around for years but that it isn’t something we typically see in everyday life.
Masters added that there aren’t any cases in Ohio. There are some in New York and New Jersey but that it is manageable. Masters said that as long as hospitals and doctors offices stick to proper handwashing and disinfecting regiments, then everything will be fine.

James explained that they will recreate Central Park and the Tavern on the Green at the Findlay Country Club. It will feature “street performers” and a live auction as well.
James said that the money raised will support their services.
James added that it will also support things like emergency communications for our active military members and installing smoke alarms. Tickets are $150 and are available at redcross.org/galaonthegreen. It will take place from 6-11 p.m. on May 18.

A developer has plans in place to build on the site of the former Argyle building in downtown Findlay. Alliance Economic Development Director Tim Mayle outlined the proposed $30 million project Thursday morning…
Audio:
The plans also call for the renovation of the Wine Merchant building just to the south of the lot.
For the project to move forward, the city will have to sell a parking lot behind the property to the Blanchard Valley Port Authority. Alliance Economic Development Director Tim Mayle explains how they plan to handle the loss of the lot…
Audio:
Mayle says the developer will agree to continue to follow city parking policy rules for the spaces moved into the building. That includes the roughly 30 public parking spaces.
Mayle says a lot has changed since the fire to make this project appealing to a developer…
Audio:
The proposal to sell the parking lot heads to Findlay City Council at their next meeting. Mayle expects the proposal to go through three readings.
The developer of the proposed building is 500 Block West LLC. Mayle says the earliest they could break ground is in the spring of 2020.
A Look Back:
Here’s what happened the day of the Argyle Fire on March 23, 2012:
The owners of the Sunny Farms Landfill are installing an odor control blanket at the facility. In its weekly update, operators said the project will seal nearly 20 acres under clay soil and a plastic liner. They expect to finish the installation by the end of the month.
Sunny Farms also says it will install three new gas extraction wells next week. The project could create more odors for a short time because they have to move previously placed waste.
A hearing about the future of the Sunny Farms Landfill in Seneca County will likely happen in July. The board of health met Wednesday to narrow down dates. Attorney Joe Durham says he wants the hearing to start sometime between July 15th and July 29th. The procedure could take three or four days.
The board also accepted Columbus lawyer Peter Precario as the hearing officer. Lawyers for Sunny Farms objected, saying Precario can’t be unbiased because he represented the city of Moraine in a landfill odor case two years ago.
The Seneca County board of health will vote on the Sunny Farms landfill operating license after the summer hearing. Earlier this year they indicated they intended to deny the permit.
Many Fostoria residents say the smell from the landfill is overbearing. The facility sits four miles south of the city.
Someone intentionally set fire to the town hall building in Cloverdale. The Ohio Fire Marshall’s Office says the early Sunday fire in western Putnam County is an active arson case. Mayor Thomas Burkhart tells the Putnam County Sentinel the Fire Marshall’s office isn’t releasing more information yet.
Firefighters from two villages responded to the fire around 4:20 a.m. Sunday. Burkhart says they got the flames out fast. They didn’t lose any records.
