04/30/19 – 1:19 P.M.

The Hancock County Board of Elections met with the Hancock County Commissioner to talk about a potential grant from the state. The grant would require over $800,000 from the county to match the funds. Commissioner Mark Gazarek said there is a lot of confusion over what’s going on.

Gazarek added that there is also some confusion on how the grant works.

The money would be used to look at buying or leasing new poll machines. Gazarek explained that the current machines don’t pair well with the poll books. The board of elections added that this makes elections take more time and effort to finalize.

The Commissioners said that they want to look further into the issues before making a decision.

04/30/19 – 11:44 A.M.

A man ignoring police was bitten by a Findlay K-9 Unit after reports of a domestic violence incident Monday. The Findlay Police Department reports that officers found 39-year-old Steven Maciejewski at the Rodeway Motel on Broad Avenue.

The woman told officers that Maciejewski was hiding in the bathroom. Officers told him to come out but he didn’t respond. When officers got into the bathroom they saw that Maciejewski climbed into the attic. K-9 officer Deke was called in due to the tight spaces. Officers told Maciejewski to come out or they would deploy the K-9. He continued to ignore them and Officer Deke bit him on the left bicep.

Maciejewski received treatment at Blanchard Valley Hospital and then was taken to the Hancock County Justice Center.

04/30/19 – 9:59 A.M.

The Findlay MOPs is hosting their annual diaper drive until Mother’s Day. Co-Leader Heidi Croy explained that they take diapers to provide a service not covered by many programs.

Croy added that diapers can be expensive.

04/30/19 – 7:41 A.M.

A Fostoria man was resentenced in Seneca County Common Pleas Court after he failed to show up to court. The Review-Times reports 33-year-old Earnest McCallister was originally sentenced to a year in prison but that has been upped to 18 months. He was sentenced to charges related to the theft of a credit card.

McCallister also faced a charge of receiving stolen property but it was dismissed as part of a plea deal.

04/30/19 – 5:21 A.M.

The southbound ramp closures at U.S. 68/State Route 15 and Lima Avenue have been postponed. ODOT tweeted that the closures will start next week rather than this week.

The ramps are located on the west side of U.S. 68/State Route 15 toward the airport. This closure is expected to last around 3 weeks as crews build the roundabout. The ramps on the east side towards Cooper tire will remain open.

04/30/19 – 5:11 A.M.

There are several construction projects planned in Findlay this week. Summit Street from Lima Avenue to Lima Street and Stanford Parkway from Westfield Drive to River Road will be closed to through traffic for waterline replacement projects.

The eastbound lanes of Production Drive and the westbound lanes of Industrial Drive remain closed to traffic. Traffic accessing the Tall Timbers area will need to enter from Production Drive and exit from Industrial Drive. Barricades and message boards will be set up to help direct traffic.

Hardin Street from Western Avenue to Cory Street and Woodworth Drive from Fostoria Avenue to the cul-de-sac will be closed to through traffic for curb replacement.

04/30/19 – 5:04 A.M.

Two teens who into a home in Pleasant Township and held the resident at gunpoint in December were sentenced yesterday for kidnapping and receiving stolen property. 19-year-old Deven Blythe and 18-year-old Rodney Williams, both of Findlay, both got 7 years in prison for kidnapping with a firearm specification and 11 months in prison for receiving stolen property.

Blythe will serve his time consecutively but Williams’ 11 month and 7-year sentences will be served concurrently. Both men also have to make restitution of $1,721.

18-year-olds Hunter Kelbley of Upper Sandusky and Alexandra Ayala of Dunkirk alongside 19-year-old Devin Kerr of Bowling Green were also indicted in the case.

04/30/19 – 4:46 A.M.

The man charged with murder in a Findlay baby’s death turned himself into the Findlay Police Department Sunday. 30-year-old Johnathon Suber was indicted for the death of 17-month-old Osiris Anthony Scott Walkers last week. He disappeared last week and the Findlay Police Department wasn’t sure if he left the area.

The baby died on July 4 last year. The Franklin County COroner’s Office ruled the death as a homicide caused by a head injury.

04/29/19 – 7:54 A.M.

Findlay’s Shade Tree Commission wants to help you get trees planted this summer through their Neighborwoods program. Tom Mills explained that the program is designed to get trees placed where you and your neighbors see fit.

Mills Said that they are using the Neighborwoods Project to get those trees put in, but also bring neighbors together.

Mills added that they will also approach areas that lack trees to see if they can get some planted.

04/29/19 – 7:26 A.M.

There is a board tasked with reviewing child fatalities in Hancock County. The Courier’s Sara Arthurs explained that the board is mandated by the state.

Arthurs said she talked to Hancock Public Health commissioner Karim Baroudi. He told her that there have been many preventable deaths in the past ten years.

Baroudi added that they will work with area agencies to help provide education and training to bring these numbers down.
