The American Red Cross Offers Safety Advice For Handling Emergencies

It’s Severe Weather Awareness Week and the American Red Cross North Central Ohio Chapter has some safety tips for you. Executive director Todd James said it is important to make sure your kids are educated on severe weather terms…

James explained that kids that know what is going on are less likely to panic and hide. He added that it is also important to make a plan.

 

James said that having a plan is the best way to keep everyone safe in an emergency. He added that you should also have kits packed.

Findlay’s Green Waste Site Will Open In New Location Soon

Findlay’s Green Waste site will open for the spring soon, and it will be in a new location. The city says you can start dropping off yard waste at 330 North Cory Street on April 2nd. The drop off location is behind the Public Works Department building.

Hours for the site will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. It will also be open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

You can drop off things like tree trimmings, brush, leaves, and grass clippings.

Findlay Woman Injured In Thursday Crash

3/22/19 – 7:37 A.M.

A one-car crash injured a Findlay woman Thursday afternoon. The Findlay Police Department says the crash happened on Greendale Avenue near Woodworth Drive around 3:30 p.m.

June Heilman was driving on Greendale when she suffered a medical issue. She drove off the side of the road and hit some landscaping.

Hanco EMS took Heilman to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment.

Judson Palmer Home Expansion Moving Forward

3/22/19 – 5:29 A.M.

The Judson Palmer home is moving forward with an expansion project at their North Main Street facility. The home is planning a $6.3 million, more than 32,000-square-foot addition. Administrator Anja Rademacher says the home’s 16 residents will move into the space by the end of the year. They’ll then renovate the existing building into more office space and storage.

Rademacher says the new building will provide a safer space since it will only have one story. Residents also will have their own walk-in shower. The rooms will be handicapped accessible.

The Judson Palmer home is an assisted living center for women.

Teenager Sentenced For Role In December Armed Robbery

3/22/19 – 5:17 A.M.

An Upper Sandusky teenager will spend four years in prison for her role in an armed robbery in a rural Hancock County home last December. Judge Reginald Routson sentenced 18-year-old Hunter Kelbley on Wednesday. Kelbley pleaded guilty to counts of aggravated burglary with a firearm specification and receiving stolen property. Prosecutor Phil Riegle says they dropped a kidnapping charge against the teen after finding she wasn’t involved in that part of the crime.

Investigators said Kelbley and four other teenagers broke into a home on Pleasant Township Road 117 on December 18. They allegedly held the 66-year-old resident at gunpoint while they robbed her.

The four other teens accused in the case are facing burglary and kidnapping charges.

More Than 50 Vehicles Broken Into In Bowling Green

Bowling Green police are looking for the suspects in a vehicle break-in spree. Detectives say someone smashed out the windows of more than 50 vehicles yesterday morning in the area of Klotz Road, Napoleon Road, and Summit Street. The suspects took tools and other valuables from the vehicles. Police are urging people to keep things they don’t want stolen out of sight.

Area Restaurants Gearing Up For College Tournament

03/21/19 – 6:16 P.M.

Local restaurants are gearing up for the big college basketball tournaments this weekend. Clay Acheson from Logan’s Irish Pub said that though they don’t typically get a lot of business for the tournaments. He said that this could be because it follows St. Patrick’s Day at the restaurant but also could be because they’re not viewed as a sports bar. He said they will show the games anyways.

Business software company Womply explained that most restaurants and bars see an average increase of 2.4% in sales during this time. Acheson said that they, like many of the downtown restaurants and bars, will have specials going for the tournaments.

World Down Syndrome Day Shows That Those With It Aren’t That Different From The Rest Of Us

It’s World Down Syndrome Day and we reached out to Blanchard Valley Center to learn more. The BVC’s Melanie Williams said that kids with Down Syndrome don’t do anything much different from kids without it.

Allie Weising from the BVC added that there are many people with Down Syndrome that live and work in our community.

They did add that Down Syndrome can lead to some physical restrictions though. This can affect the heart, eyes, and speech.

ODOT Provides Update On Winter Operations

03/21/19 – 12:56 P.M.

ODOT reports that road costs were down as winter came to a close. So far this year ODOT has used over 8,770 tons of salt to cover over 124,650 miles of roadways in Hancock County. At this time last year, they had used over 9,650 tons of salt, covering more than 131,690 miles.

This has cost ODOT over $1.18 million so far this year. This is down from over $1.19 million at this time last year.
