Carey Plans Maintenance On Water Towers

Plans are underway in Carey for maintenance on the water tower on Ogg Street and a standpipe in Waterworks Park. The village is contracting with an Atlanta company for maintenance of the interior and exterior of both towers. The work will cost more than $1.4 million over 10 years.

Village Administrator Roy Johnson says it’s been seven years since they’ve done maintenance on either tower.

Arlington Council Discusses Assessments For Lagoon System Repairs

Arlington Village Council plans to assess landowners to pay for repairs to the Apple Tree Grove subdivision lagoon system. Council members say pumps for the system need repaired. They also need new fencing.

Around 20 properties will get assessed for the work. The assessments will show up on water bills for those affected.

Secret Indictments Charge Three With Drug Trafficking Crimes

Three Findlay residents are facing drug trafficking charges. Recently released secret indictments show 32-year-old Shane Lively faces two counts of trafficking in cocaine.

37-year-old Joshua Thompson faces a charge of aggravated trafficking in drugs for allegedly selling meth near a juvenile last June.

22-year-old Michael Bibler is facing a count of trafficking in a fentanyl-related compound.

Oncologist Gives Cancer Prevention And Screening Advice For World Cancer Day

Monday was World Cancer Day so we reached out to an expert to talk about preventative measures. Dr. Derek Thomas is an oncologist at Hematology & Oncology Associates. He said the best way to treat cancer is to prevent it.

Thomas added that cancer screenings and preventative medicine are always evolving and getting better. He added that they can help.

He explained that some cancers can even be prevented by vaccines such as the HPV vaccine most people get when they are 11. He said that the vaccine can prevent several types of cancers including penile and pelvic cancers.

He explained that you should make sure to have a positive and close relationship with your doctor to know what screenings you should get and when you should get them.

Findlay Machine & Tool Under New Ownership

A local entrepreneur bought Findlay Machine & Tool, Inc. Nicholas Reinhart closed the deal on the business last Thursday. FMT is known for fabrication, mechanical, electrical and machining services. The business also manufactures aqueous-based parts cleaning systems.

Reinhart said that there will be no immediate changes in the company’s operations. He added that he eyeing opportunities to leverage the company’s labor and equipment resources into new markets.

Elks Lodge Keeping Winter Away With Beach Bash On Saturday

02/04/19 – 5:22 P.M.

The Findlay Elks Lodge is hosting a Beach Bash this weekend and everyone is invited. Secretary Jeff Jensen explained that they want a lot of people because the proceeds go to charity.

The bash will feature The Reunion Band and food from Campus Pollyeyes. Tickets are $7 at the door, which will open at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Mazza Museum Will Get To Showcase Art In Toledo

02/04/19 – 2:30 P.M.

Findlay Rotarians got to hear an update on the Mazza Museum at the University of Findlay. Museum curator Dan Chudzinski said that they will have a gallery opening at the Toledo Zoo later this year.

Chudzinski said that the gallery will be in the newly renovated Museum of Science. It is set to open on Memorial Day this year.

Chudzinski added that this will give the Mazza Museum great publicity and the opportunity to showcase more of its pieces. Chudzinski said that they have an extensive colllection to share.

He added that the Mazza Museum can only show about 3% of their collection.

Fatal Accidents Down In Ohio Last Year

02/04/19 – 10:45 A.M.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that fatal accidents were down in 2018. According to the State Patrol Findlay Post, 1,071 people lost their lives on the roadways. In 2017, there were 1,179 fatalities. Last year in Hancock County there were 17 reported fatalities. Of those fatalities, six were OVI-related and six involved someone not wearing their seatbelt.

Findlay City Council Agrees To Credit Card Policy

2/4/19 – 7:22 A.M.

Findlay City Council has agreed to a policy on handling credit cards. The Courier reports council voted 7-0 in favor of an emergency resolution last week to meet a state deadline to have a policy in place. Council members Dina Ostrander, Jim Niemeyer, and Tim Watson were absent.

The new policy means the city auditor keeps the credit cards. Employees must sign them out for specific uses and then return them after use.

Council tabled similar legislation in October. Former Mayor Lydia Mihalik, Law Director Don Rasmussen, and municipal court officials took issue with requirements to return credit cards to the city auditor’s office after each use.

Around 70 Findlay employees have access to city credit cards.
