Lego Team From Bigelow Hill Intermediate School Does Well In First Competition

The Bigelow Hill Intermediate School’s lego team did well at their first competition recently. Superintendent Ed Kurt said that the entire district is very proud.

The team consists of students in the fourth and fifth grades. They get to build robotic lego sets and code them to perform several functions. Kurt said that the students had a lot to do for the competition.

The team is partnered with OneEnergy, who helps teach the students about engineering.

Expert Talks About Quick Fixes To Maintain Heat In Your Home

With wind-chills hitting well below zero this week you might be looking for ways to keep your home warm. University of Findlay assistant professor of environmental safety and occupational health management Don Elswick said that you should check your furnace.

He added that there are several other things that you should also do.

Elswick said that you should check on the condition of your fireplace or stove to ensure that they are ready to go.

Fire Claims Two Lives In West Leipsic

Two people died in a house fire in West Leipsic Monday. Firefighters were called 51 South Third Street, lot 3 for a house trailer on fire. There was heavy smoke and fire coming from the west end of the trailer. Firefighters tried searching the home but deteriorating conditions forced them to attack the fire first.

Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters searched the home and found one male and one female. Their names are not being released. The home was a total loss with an approximate value of $60,000.

The Ohio State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the fire. The fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Local Gas Prices Flat Compared To Last Week

1/28/19 – 7:01 A.M.

Despite a 40 cent jump in Findlay gas prices last week, we’re actually starting the week with prices close to where they started last Monday. OhioGasPrices.com reports the price of a gallon of regular in Findlay is $1.88 today. That’s up a penny from last Monday.

Prices remain flat in Ottawa. The average price there is $1.99 per gallon today. That’s the same as it was a week ago.

The statewide average is up to $2.05 per gallon, a 10 cent increase from last Monday.

Findlay Takes Over Administration Of Backflow Devices

The city of Findlay has taken over the administration of backflow devices from Hancock Public Health. City officials say Findlay water customers are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of backflow prevention devices on their property. You should get a detailed letter and pre-printed inspection form by mid-March of this year.

The city will assess processing fees on water bills after they mail out the forms.

Findlay Teen Injured In Weekend Crash On I-75

1/28/19 – 5:30 A.M.

A weekend crash injured a Findlay teenager. The State Highway Patrol says the crash happened on I-75 southbound just past the State Route 613 exit around 6:10 a.m. Saturday

17-year-old Jade Sierra was driving her pickup truck south when she lost control and hit a guardrail. Sierra received treatment at Blanchard Valley Hospital for minor injuries. Troopers cited her for failure to operate a vehicle without reasonable control.

Findlay Man Takes Plea Deal In Overdose Case

1/28/19 – 5:23 A.M.

A Findlay man recently pleaded guilty to two charges stemming from a 2016 overdose death. 38-year-old Maynard Norton appeared in court last week. He took a plea deal on involuntary manslaughter and corrupting another with drugs charges. Prosecutors charged him following the death of 25-year-old Jaerrod McDaniel on December 17 of 2016.

Norton rejected a plea deal last August. It would have recommended a five-year prison sentence. He now faces 11 years for the involuntary manslaughter charge and eight years for the corrupting another with drugs charges.

Firefighters Rescue Man From Flooded Car

1/28/19 – 5:13 A.M.

Firefighters from Findlay and Vanlue rescued a man from an SUV stuck in high water late last week. The fire departments responded to the intersection of Township Roads 208 and 234 around 2 p.m. Friday.

Vanlue assistant fire chief Steve Baum says the man drove into a flooded part of the road near the Findlay reservoir and drove until he stalled out. Firefighters had to use ice-rescue suits to get to the SUV because of sub-freezing temperatures.

EMTs took the man to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment. No other details are available.
