Alcohol Suspected In Monday Crash Near McComb

1/8/19 – 8:58 A.M.

Alcohol may have been a factor in a one-car crash near McComb Monday night. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports 27-year-old Chelsea Deal of Findlay was driving south on Pleasant Township Road 123 north of County Road 203 around 9:15 p.m. when she drove off the road and into a ditch.

First responders from McComb PMP took Deal to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

Deputies cited Deal for OVI, failure to control, and a seatbelt violation.

Findlay Resident Killed In Monday Night Crash

1/8/19 – 8:42 A.M.

A two-car crash killed a Findlay resident Monday night. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened on State Route 12, just east of County Road 140, around 11:15 p.m.

21-year-old Yanna Kerkes of Findlay was driving east when she crossed the center line and hit an SUV driven by 21-year-old Mackenzie Howard of Findlay. First responders pronounced Kerkes dead at the scene of the crash. The Liberty Township Fire Department extracted Howard from her car. Hanco EMS took her to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Fostoria Man Accused Of Breaking Into Cash Advance Business

1/8/19 – 6:50 A.M.

A Fostoria man is facing charges after he allegedly broke into a cash advance business over the weekend. The Fostoria Police Department says the break-in happened around 3:30 a.m. at the Cashland store at 1227 North Countyline Street.

Investigators say 35-year-old Josh Garner broke a window to get into the store. He tripped a burglary alarm and police officers arrived before Garner could escape.

Garner allegedly said there were more people involved in the crime, but officers didn’t find anyone else in the store.

Garner faces a charge of breaking and entering.

SmartAsset Rates Findlay High For Income Growth

SmartAsset.com ranked Findlay high when it comes to income growth. SmartAssets A.J. Smith explained that the growth in income allows you to look at your own finances to find where you stand.

She said that Findlay saw income growth of 6.9% for the past 10 years, well over the national average of 2.1% during the same time. She encouraged people to look at how their income has grown compared to others in the community.

Fostoria Teen Injured In Weekend Motorcycle Crash

1/8/19 – 5:26 A.M.

A Sunday morning motorcycle crash injured a Fostoria teenager. The State Highway Patrol says the crash happened on State Route 613 near Van Buren around 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

18-year-old Robert Futrell was riding west on the highway when he went off the right side of the road. The crash threw him from his motorcycle.

Hanco EMS took Futrell to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Troopers cited him for operating a vehicle without reasonable control.

Findlay Man Injured In Crash On East Lincoln Street

1/8/19 – 5:19 A.M.

A Findlay man rolled his car when he tried to avoid a collision late Monday afternoon. The Findlay Police Department says the crash happened in the 400 block of East Lincoln Street around 5:30 p.m.

78-year-old David Roth was driving west when he saw an eastbound truck he thought was over the center line. He swerved right and hit a parked SUV. Roth’s car then swerved left and rolled over.

Roth went to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of chest pains.

The police did not issue a citation.

Classes Move Into New Addition Of Fostoria Intermediate Elementary School

1/8/19 – 5:12 A.M.

A new addition to the Fostoria Intermediate Elementary School recently hosted classes for the first time. Superintendent Andrew Sprang gave a project update during Monday’s school board meeting. Sprang says the addition opened after Christmas break with sixth-grade classes taking place.

Fostoria Intermediate Elementary School will host pre-Kindergarten through sixth-grade classes when construction finishes. Construction currently continues through the building. Sprang says crews worked on tearing up the ceiling, knocking out walls and other projects over the holiday break.

The pre-K through sixth-grade building project should wrap up by the beginning of the 2019-20 school year. Construction on the new junior/senior high school could wrap up by December of this year.

Arlington Municipal Workers Say They’ve Been Threatened By Residents

Arlington municipal workers say some residents not happy about high water bills have threatened them. Village council talked about the issue during a Monday meeting. Workers spoke about three recent threats related to higher bills or shutoff notices. Council told the workers to contact the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office if it happens again.

Arlington recently installed new, more accurate water meters. As a result, some bills could be higher.

Funeral Procession For Police Officer Set For Today

1/8/19 – 4:53 A.M.

The Findlay Police Department says the funeral procession for officer Douglas Akers could result in some traffic delays later today.

The procession will start around 4 p.m. on State Route 12 west of Findlay. It will travel east to Western Avenue and then north to Trenton Avenue. From there the procession will go east to North Main Street and south through downtown to Lima Avenue. After that, it will go west to Cory Street, north to West Main Cross, and then west to the city limits.

The procession will last around 25 minutes. The funeral and burial services for Akers are private.

Akers died in his home on December 31.
