Medical Condition May Have Led To Melrose Avenue Crash

11/23/18 – 9:58 A.M.

A medical condition may have led to a two-car crash that claimed one life in Findlay late Thursday afternoon. The Findlay Police Department reports the collision happened in the 400 block of West Melrose Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Police have not publicly identified the driver who died.

Investigators say the driver was heading east on Melrose and stopped behind a parked car waiting for traffic to pass. An SUV also stopped behind a parked car in the same area. The first driver then began to drive between the stopped cars, and hit the SUV.

The crash remains under investigation.

Hancock County Jail Inmate Death Under Investigation

11/23/18 – 9:51 A.M.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death in the county jail as an apparent suicide. A corrections officer found a man dead in his cell around 1 p.m. Thursday. The Lucas County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy on the man to determine the cause of death.

Authorities have not publicly identified the man. They say he had been in the jail for about a week and was facing several felony charges.

Bluffton Hospital Receives National Award For Excellence In Quality And Patient Perspectives

Bluffton Hospital received national recognition for performance leadership in quality and patient perspectives. The award comes from The Chartis Center of Rural Health and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health. This is the fourth time Bluffton Hospital has been recognized.

Hospital president Chris Keller said, “Our patients at Bluffton Hospital are our top priority. We continuously strive to provide the highest quality care to our rural communities with the use of updated technology and advanced medicine.”

Blaze Of Lights Celebration Set For November 24 In Bluffton

Bluffton is gearing up for its Blaze of Lights celebration. The celebration includes a holiday parade, live entertainment, and family activities. The Ream folk art display will also be lit during the celebration. The event is scheduled for November 24 with the parade starting at 5 p.m.

Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Paula Scott said that you can expect Main Street through the village to be swarming with people.

Turkey Trot 5K Kicks Off For The 8th Time In Findlay Tomorrow

11/21/18 – 2:19 P.M.

The 8th Annual Turkey Trot 5K will be taking place in Findlay tomorrow morning. The proceeds of the race will benefit the Women’s Resource Center of Hancock County. Executive director Laurie Turnow said that this will support many of their free services.

Runners and walkers are welcome to come to St. Michael East Church to take part. Registration for the race will be at 7:30 a.m. and the race will start at 9.

Health Insurance Costs Going Up For North Baltimore Village Employees

11/21/18 – 5:20 A.M.

Village employees in North Baltimore will pay more for their health insurance next year. Council members discussed the insurance plan Tuesday, saying costs will go up 11 percent in 2019. The dental and vision plans won’t change.

The village could consider adding a wellness health savings account in the future, but they didn’t reach about that a decision Tuesday.

Two Injured In Overpass Crash

11/21/18 – 5:12 A.M.

A two-car crash injured two people on an I-75 overpass Tuesday afternoon. The Findlay Police Department says the crash happened on West Trenton Avenue just before 2:30 p.m.

66-year-old Gary Huff of Fostoria was driving east on the overpass when he failed to stop at a red light and hit a car driven by 48-year-old Steven Rettig of Kenton. Hanco EMS took both men to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment.

Huff told the police the brakes on his truck failed. Officers cited him for disobeying a traffic control device.

Retired Hancock County Juvenile And Probate Court Judge Passes Away

11/21/18 – 5:01 A.M.

Retired Hancock County Juvenile and Probate Court Judge Allan Davis passed away Tuesday. Local legal professionals remember Davis as professional and kind, with a great sense of humor. Findlay attorney Tom Drake says Davis,  “tried to be fair to everybody. That didn’t mean you always won your case, but he was considered to be a very fair judge that people enjoyed appearing in front of.”

Retired Hancock County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Niemeyer says Davis believed in giving kids a second or third chance, but that he also expected them to make positive progress.

Davis served as the juvenile and probate judge from 1974 to 2015. He was the youngest judge in Ohio when voters first put him in office. When he retired three years ago he was the state’s longest-serving juvenile and probate judge.

Findlay Water Issues Outlined In Updates To Water Department Webpage

11/20/18 – 10:30 P.M.

Findlay City Council got an update on Findlay’s water situation during their Tuesday meeting. Service director Brian Thomas said that concerned resident can now get more information on what’s happening on their updated website.

He said that this page talks about what happened to the water and what they are doing to fix it. He said that the reason this is taking so long is due to how much organic material was tossed when the reservoirs turned. Thomas said that the water department continues to tweak measurements to get the water back to normal.

Thomas said that they are also taking precautions to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

In the meantime he said that if your water tastes or smells funny you should call the water department at 419-424-7192.
