The Hancock County Commissioners voted 2 to 1 today to impose a quarter percent sales tax. Commissioner Brian Robertson explained that the money raised by this tax is long overdue.
Commissioner Tim Bechtol voted in favor saying that they can’t continue to struggle with finances.
Bechtol explained that there won’t be any new taxes coming out of this decision. This tax replaces the previous quarter percent tax for flood mitigation.
Commissioner Mark Gazarek said he opposes the tax because he thinks voters should decide taxes, but also because he thinks it could hurt future endeavors.
The tax collection for flood mitigation will end on December 31st with the final payment coming back from the sate in March. The replacement tax will start on January 1.
