Some people have taken to social media to point out that Findlay water tastes funny and is making people sick. City of Findlay safety director Paul Schmelzer explained that the water is safe. The bad taste and smell are due to the reservoirs turning over. This happens when an extreme temperature change causes warm water from the bottom of the reservoir to rise up into the water treatment plant. The water is heavier with organic matter causing a foul smell and taste.
The Ohio EPA backed up Schmelzer’s claim saying that they are aware of the situation. EPA Spokesperson Dina Pierce told the Courier that residents may want to use bottled water until the smell and taste have cleared, but that it isn’t necessary.
The Findlay Water Department is flushing lines citywide to clear the system of the water. Water Superintendent Jason Phillips said it will take a few more days.
