McComb Set Up Community Meet Up Spot

McComb has a spot set up to safely conduct internet deals. The McComb Police Department reports that they have a Community Meet Up Spot on the east side on the Municipal Building. It is a safe, lit space that is watched by cameras. If you have purchased or sold something online then you can do the exchange there.

New Executive Director Named For All Hazards Training Center

The University of Findlay’s All Hazards Training Center has a new executive director. Jeff McGuire is taking over the role after serving as the center’s operations director for 19 years. He is replacing Randy Van Dyne, who retired in August.

McGuire said that he is looking forward to enhancing the center’s reputation worldwide. The All Hazards Training Center specializes in corporate-wide custom safety and security training.

Rotary Speaker: Birding Big Business In Northwest Ohio

Bird watching is big business in northwest Ohio. Kimberly Kaufman of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory told the Findlay Rotary Club Monday that the annual spring migration has created a whole new tourist season along Lake Erie…

Kaufman says that in 2013, more than 67,000 birders spent more than $37 million in the region. She adds that this past spring saw more than 90,000 people visit the region for the spring migration…

Local Colleges Score High Marks In U.S. News & World Reports Rankings

9/10/18 – 9:14 A.M.

The University of Findlay scored well in the 2019 edition of U.S. News and World Reports college rankings. The magazine ranked UF 37th in best Regional Universities in the midwest. The University also ranked 51st in the Best Value Schools category.

Ohio Northern University also had a solid showing. The school tied for fourth in the best Regional Colleges in the Midwest category. ONU was 3rd in Best Value Schools, and tied for 30th in engineering programs without a doctorate.

Bluffton University was 30th in the Regional Colleges in the midwest category. It ranked 21st in Best Value Schools.

Best Value rankings balance the school’s academic quality against the net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid.

Findlay Native Earns Major Military Promotion

A Findlay native recently moved into even higher ranks in the military. The U.S. Army Public Affairs Branch promoted Colonel Amy Hannah to the rank of brigadier general during a September 5 ceremony in Belgium. Hannah has been serving as the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe public affairs officer.

General Curtis Scaparrotti is the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and presided over the ceremony. He said, “Possibly more than any other rank, the trust, faith, and confidence the nation puts in its Brigadier General is truly special.”

Hannah’s next assignment is to serve as the director of the U.S. Army Marketing and Research Group.

Local Gas Prices Up Slightly

9/10/18 – 6:54 A.M.

Local gas prices are slightly higher as we start a new work week. OhioGasPrices.com says the average price for a gallon of regular in Findlay is $2.71. That’s up five cents from last week. A month ago we were paying $2.60 per gallon.

Drivers in Ottawa report paying $2.68 per gallon today. That’s up a penny over the last seven days.

Local prices remain below the state average, which is $2.73. The state average has increased two cents from last Monday.

Fostoria To Hold 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Tuesday

9/10/18 – 6:44 A.M.

Fostoria will hold a September 11 remembrance ceremony Tuesday morning. The event is set for 9:59 a.m. at the Fostoria Fire Station at 233 West South Street. 9:59 a.m. marks the time the first tower fell following the terrorist attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001.

Fire Chief Brian Herbert, Police Chief Keith Loreno, and local clergy will all speak during the ceremony.

The event is open to the public. If you plan to attend you should park on Crocker and Wood streets behind the station.

Several Road Work Projects Happening In Findlay This Week

9/10/18 – 5:28 A.M.

Findlay has several road projects on the schedule for this week. The city says north and southbound traffic on South Main Street remains reduced to one lane in each direction between Lima Street and Woodley Avenue for resurfacing work.

Elsewhere Concord Court and part of Parkside Place are closed during working hours for a waterline replacement project. The city is also replacing a waterline on Woodworth Drive. That will close the road between Fostoria Avenue and Glen Meadow.

Street resurfacing is closing Summit Street between Lima Avenue and Stadium Drive, as well as Ventura Drive between County Road 99 and Main Street.

New Paving Projects Start In Hancock County This Week

9/10/18 – 5:12 A.M.

Some new road work projects get underway in Hancock County this week. ODOT says you’ll see lane restrictions on State Route 12 at County Road 236 on Tuesday. Crews will repair the left turn lane at that location.

Crews are also restricting State Route 12 to one lane in areas between State Route 37 and Wyandot County for pavement repair. ODOT will perform similar work on U.S. 224 between State Route 235 and Putnam County.

U.S. 68 in Arlington remains closed between Liberty Street and the Buck Run bridge. State Route 330 over State Route 15 in Vanlue also remains closed for bridge deck replacement. Crews continue to restrict State Route 330 to one lane between North Street in Vanlue and State Route 568 for a resurfacing project. You’ll also see lane reductions on State Route 568 between Bright Road in Findlay and the Wyandot County line.
