Seneca County Commissioners Approve Grants For Historic Preservation Efforts

The Seneca County Commissioners have issued more than $25,000 in grants for area historical organizations. The Review-Times reports St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Tiffin applied for $10,000 to paint the metal cornices as part of a roofing project. Meadowbrook Park in Bascom applied for more than $15,000 to coat and seal the roof of the Historic Redwood Ballroom.

The money comes from a $50,000 payment made by the owner of the Rover Pipeline. The company had to make the payment after they destroyed a house with historical significance.

Arcadia School Board Buying New Doors For Elementary Classrooms

The Arcadia school district is changing the doors to 22 classrooms as part of a countywide safety project. The school board approved buying the doors during a Tuesday meeting. The current doors have glass material in the bottom section, making them incompatible with “the boot” safety device.

The boot allows teachers to secure doors in the event of a school intruder.

Van Buren School Board To Meet Twice Next Week

9/12/18 – 5:24 A.M.

The Van Buren school board is holding two special meetings next week. The meetings are set for 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday in the community room. Both meetings include an executive session to “consider the appointment of a public official.”

While the agendas don’t say what position the board is considering, the group is down to four members. Dolores Cramer recently resigned due to moving to a different school district.

Park District Looking For Grant Money For New Boat Launch

The Hancock Park District is applying for grants to pay for boat launch facilities. The program from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources can give organizations up to a 50 percent reimbursement for projects.

The park district hasn’t identified a specific project yet. Director Gary Pruitt says they are looking at the portage areas east of the Riverside Park waterfall, and Shank Lake at the Oakwoods Nature Preserve. Pruitt says they are also considering launches at the Blanchard River Nature Preserve, Riverbend Recreation Area and Jackson Landing.

The grant application is due in November.

Contract Awarded For Hancock County Jail Boiler Replacement Project

9/12/18 – 5:11 A.M.

A Fremont company will replace three boilers at the Hancock County jail. Marlin White and Sons submitted the low bid for the project. The county has agreed to a contract worth more than $178,000, which was under the $250,000 estimate.

White and Sons will replace the boilers next month, before the winter heating season. The county is paying for the work with borrowed money designated for jail renovations.

Survey Looking Into The Health Of Hancock County Residents

A new survey aims to gauge the health of Hancock County residents. Be Healthy Now Hancock County is working with the Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio and researchers at the University of Toledo to conduct the survey. The group will ask more than 3,000 people to take part over the next two months.

Results of the survey will come out next spring.

The anonymous survey asks participants to answer questions about general health, risk and protective health factors, and access to health care. The group will use the answers to give a snapshot of the health of Hancock County.

Findlay Man Faces 13th OVI Charge

9/12/18 – 4:59 A.M.

A Findlay man is facing his 13th drunken driving charge. The Hancock County grand jury indicted 55-year-old Mark Ametrano on a count of OVI Tuesday. The charge stems from an August 31 incident.

Ametrano has pleaded guilty twice to felony drunken driving charges. Court records show previous DUI sentences have suspended his driver’s license for life.

Ametrano served time in prison in 2010 for a drunken driving charge. The four-year sentence included a 120-day minimum, and Ametrano got out of prison in 2011.

Blanchard Valley Hospital Hosting A Designer Purse Bingo

09/11/18 – 6:35 P.M.

Blanchard Valley Hospital Gift Shop is hosting a bingo event with designer purses as prizes. The purses will be from brands like Michael Kors and Kate Spade. The event will be in the Marathon Auditorium of Blanchard Valley Hospital on September 22. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the first bingo call will be at 7 p.m.

Aside from bingo, there will also be silent auctions, a 50/50 raffle, and light snacks. Tickets are $35 and are available in the BVH Gift SHop or by calling 419-425-5388.

Walk To End Alzheimer’s Returns Later This Month

09/11/18 – 4:41 P.M.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is coming up later this month in Findlay. Brittany Beltz from the Alzheimer’s Association explained that the walk/5k will feature all sorts of entertainment.

Beltz added that there will be food, activities, and K9 demonstrations. The walk will be on September 22 with registration at 9 a.m. It will take place at the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex at the University of Findlay.
