Car Tunes Kicks Off This Weekend In Downtown Findlay

Car Tunes on Main is coming back to Findlay this weekend. Corvette Club president Dan Jensen said that the car show raises money for Open Arms.

Jensen said they try to get a bunch of cars involved.

Jensen said that they give the money raised to Open Arms Domestic and Rape Crisis Services. Last year they raised over $18,000.

Aside from cars, there will also be food, raffles, and prizes available. The event will take place in downtown Findlay from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday. Admission is free.

IRS Scams Plague Hancock County Wednesday

There has been a massive amount of IRS scam calls to Hancock County residents today. Findlay Mayor Lydia Mihalik explained that you should just hang up.

Mihalik said that they have even received reports of the scammers reaching out through text as well.

The scammers will call or text saying that they are from the IRS and that you owe money. They’ll say if you don’t pay then they will have you arrested. Mihalik explained that the IRS will not call or text you and threaten to throw in jail.

If you receive this scam, you should hang up. Never send money or private information to someone you do not know.

Ohio’s Tax Free Holiday Kicks Off This Weekend

This weekend will be a great time for back to school shopping because of Ohio’s tax-free holiday. The holiday will start early this Friday at midnight and last through late Sunday evening. During the holiday, items like clothes costing $75 or less, and school supplies and instructional materials at $20 or less will be sales and use tax-free.

Car Break-Ins Reported In Forest

Police in Forest are reminding residents to lock their cars. A post on the department’s Facebook page says they’ve recently seen a rash of break-ins in unlocked vehicles. The post adds you should make sure to lock your home and garages for extra security.

Investigators are asking you to report suspicious activity by calling 419-273-2552.

Carey Village Employee Injured Monday

8/1/18 – 7:34 A.M.

A Carey village employee suffered minor injuries while at work this week. The Carey Police Department says the incident happened on Dow Street around 9:30 a.m. Monday.

25-year-old Winston Stanberry was towing a recycling trailer with a pickup truck. 38-year-old Adam Myers was riding on the back of the trailer when he fell off.

Myers went to Wyandot Memorial Hospital for treatment.

West Nile Discovered In Seneca County Mosquito Pools

Mosquitoes in Seneca County have tested positive for the West Nile Virus. The Review-Times reports 11 pools of mosquitos from four locations in the county recently showed positive tests. County Health Commissioner Beth Schweitzer says they haven’t seen any human West Nile infections.

The virus spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito. Schweitzer says you can stay safe by using insect repellents on exposed skin when you are outside. Peak mosquito biting hours are from dusk to dawn. You can also help reduce mosquito pools by taking care of standing water on your property.

UF Tobacco-Free Starting Today

The University of Findlay is officially tobacco-free starting today. The school announced the tobacco-free policy earlier in the summer, and today is the first day it is in effect. The new rules ban the use of tobacco and nicotine on campus. That includes vaping devices.

The school will place signs across the campus to remind students, staff, and visitors about the policy. They’ll make exceptions on a case-by-case basis for academic research and theater productions on campus.

Findlay Armed Robbery Suspects Indicted

8/1/18 – 5:28 A.M.

Four people are facing charges for their alleged roles in an armed robbery. On Tuesday, the Hancock County grand jury indicted 19-year-old Tyrone Taylor of rural Findlay, 18-year-old Kelsey Murfield of Delaware, Ohio, 19-year-old Roderick Michael Jr. of Columbus, and 20-year-old Russell Ellis of Tiffin on aggravated robbery counts.

The charges carry a firearms specification. Prosecutor Phil Riegle says that means all four suspects knew about the gun used in the robbery behind Domino’s Pizza in Findlay on July 11.

Findlay Man Facing Assault Charge For Fight Behind Bar

8/1/18 – 5:21 A.M.

A Findlay man is facing an assault charge stemming from a November fight behind the Walnut Saloon. The Hancock County grand jury indicted James Boyce on Tuesday.

Hancock County Prosecutor Phil Riegle says the fight is not connected to a fatal incident behind the same bar last December. That incident led to the death of 53-year-old Gregory Hammer of Findlay. One person is facing charges in that case.

AARP Ranks Findlay High For “Livability”

A new survey from the AARP says Findlay ranks high for “livability.” The survey took into account things like housing, transportation, environment, health, and opportunity. Findlay tied with 15 other towns for the 21st spot. The AARP included 248 towns in the rankings.

Findlay’s highest score came in the opportunities section of the report. The city received high marks for economic and educational opportunities. Findlay’s lowest ranking came in the environment section, which looked at air and water quality.
