The North Central Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross wants to make sure that you have a safe Labor Day weekend. If you’re going to be traveling they suggest making sure you take care in the construction zones. You should also make sure you buckle up and drive sober.
If you’re heading to a beach, make sure you stay cautious of dangerous rip currents. The Red Cross said you should avoid piers and jetties. These areas often have permanent rip currents.

Awakening Minds Art had a grand opening of its brand new location today. Founder and executive director Sarah Crisp said that it’s everything they wanted.
Crisp added that they owe a lot of the furniture in the building to generous donors. She said that all of the furniture in the building was donated and is state of the art.
The building features sensory rooms, classrooms, workspaces, and plenty of storage to accommodate the needs of the program.

There are several events happening at the Hancock County Fair this weekend. Tomorrow at 11 a.m. is the Hancock Home Brewers in the Old Mill Stream Center. At the same time in the youth building, there will be registration for a coloring contest with the judging an hour later. Saturday evening the Broken Horn Rodeo at 7 p.m. in the South Grandstand. The Open Class Horse Team Pullswill take place at the North Grandstand at 7:30.
On Sunday you can catch tractor pulls in the South Grandstand at noon. The best dressed small animal contest will be at 3:30 p.m. at the South Show Arena. At 6:30 you can catch the Showman of Showman Contest in the Show Arena.
Monday will feature auction and sales throughout the morning with a Demo-Derby in the South Grandstand at 3 p.m.

The Jr. Fair Livestock Sale at the Hancock County Fair is coming up on Monday and it teaches many important lessons. That’s according to former County Farm Bureau president Gary Wilson…
Wilson said that this teaches kids about responsibility. He added that it also gives people the chance to see how these animals are treated.
The Livestock Sale will be on Monday at 9 a.m. with registration at 8 a.m.

The State Highway Patrol plans to have a visible presence this Labor Day weekend. Aside from stepped up enforcement, the agency is reminding you to drive safe and sober over the next few days.
22 crashes killed 24 people across Ohio during Labor Day weekend last year. Ten of the crashes involved drunk drivers. Nine people killed weren’t wearing a seatbelt.
The State Patrol made more than 800 OVI arrests around the state in 2017 during the final holiday weekend of the summer.

Repair work is closing another Hancock County railroad crossing this holiday weekend. The Hancock County engineer’s office says work is taking place at the County Road 2 crossing through September 4. CSX is performing repair work in that area.

The Fostoria Planning Commission has approved plans for a spec building on the edge of the city. The Review-Times reports Ohio Logistics plans to build a 200,000-square-foot building at the intersection of State Route 12 and Weaver Road.
Mayor Eric Keckler says “everything has been studied very carefully and we see no issues at this point.”

Columbus Grove is looking at replacing street lights in the downtown area. The Putnam County Sentinel reports the village is examining the use of lights with an antique design.
If council approves the project, the lights will replace existing fixtures along Sycamore and High streets.

Findlay police officers are taking part in training at Findlay High School today. The police department is reviewing ALICE procedures with school staff members. They’ll also train for active shooter scenarios between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Classes aren’t in session today. The high school isn’t open to visitors during the training exercises.
ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate. School districts across the nation have adopted the policy to deal with potential threats.
