Everyday Agriculture Report Says Farmer’s Markets Are Important For Communities

The USDA’s Agriculture Everyday Report made it onto WFIN and talked about how Farmer’s Markets help farmers and communities. The report said that Farmer’s Markets come in all shapes and sizes but generally utilize local space, bringing a community together. Farmers see more profit from direct sales rather than selling to a distributor.

Fostoria Man Hurt In Rollover Crash

06/15/18 – 3:10 P.M.

A Fostoria Man was hurt in a car accident in Biglick Township Friday morning. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports that the accident happened around 9:15 a.m. on County Road 23. 32-year-old Matthew Cullison of Fostoria was heading south on the road when he lost control and rolled over after going off the east side of the road.

42-year-old Jeremiah Cochran was a passenger in the vehicle. Hanco EMS took him to Promedica Fostoria Community Hospital for unknown injuries.

Cullison was cited for operating a vehicle without reasonable control.

Red Cross Launches New Campaign To Help Raise Blood Donations

The American Red Cross is in need of more blood donations as blood donor numbers continue to fall. External communications director Christina Peters told WFIN that donor numbers are down.

Peters said that this is why they’ve started the Missing Types Campaign.

She said that the missing types will allow people to share how they are the missing type. It will also help raise awareness and get more people to donate.

Putnam County Village Records Declared “Unauditable”

6/15/18 – 5:01 A.M.

A Putnam County village could be in hot water with the State Auditor’s office. State Auditor Dave Yost declared Belmore’s financial records “unauditable” Thursday. The finding says the village has ignored requests for the information.

Yost’s office sent a letter to every Bellmore official in May requesting the documents. In a letter to the village, the auditor’s office provided a list of information required to complete the audit. Within 90 days of the letter, the village must revise its financial records and provide the data.

The state attorney general’s office could file a lawsuit to force officials to turn over the information.

Mihalik Appointed To Women Mayors Leadership Committee

Findlay Mayor Lydia Mihalik is the new vice chairwoman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Women Mayors Leadership Alliance. The appointment came during the group’s annual meeting this month in Boston.

The goal of the alliance is to encourage and develop involvement and leadership potential for female mayors within the organization.

Mihalik is also the chairwoman of conference’s Standing Committee on Children, Health and Human Services.

Shirley’s Popcorn Raising Money For Literacy This Weekend

Shirley’s Popcorn is celebrating their namesake this weekend. Shirley’s Jennifer Swartzlander explained that they honor longtime employee Shirley by supporting what she loved.

The University of Findlay’s Clubhouse offers free reading tutoring to support local children. The proceeds of the party will go towards providing funding for the program.

Shirley’s Birthday Celebration will be this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the Findlay Shirley’s Popcorn location.

Findlay City Planning Recommends Approval Of Hancock County Fairgrounds Cattle Barn Project

06/14/18 – 6:46 P.M.

The Hancock County Fairgrounds could be getting a new cattle barn and show arena this summer. Findlay City Planning Commission voted to recommend the approval of the over 7600 square foot facility. The project is being privately funded and could cost somewhere between $130,000 and $150,000. The only stipulation is that the building has to be completed by the time the fair rolls around.

The project still needs approval from Wood County.

Findlay City Planning Votes Down Proposed Drug Treatment Center

06/14/18 – 6:38 P.M.

Findlay City Council Chambers were filled as people came to hear what the decision was for a proposed drug treatment center on Manor Hill Road. Hancock Regional Planning Commission’s Matt Cordonnier explained that City Planning wanted more information on the project.

Since the developers were not present and the room was filled with opponents to the project, the commission voted against it.
