Carey School Board Approves Tax Abatement Deal

4/10/18 – 5:20 A.M.

The Carey school board has approved a tax abatement for a local company. Members signed off on a 15-year, 100 percent abatement for Hanon Systems USA. The company has proposed an expansion of its facility in the Arrowhead Commerce Park. Hanon will pay the school district around $17,000 per year during the agreement instead of paying property taxes to the school.

The village still has to approve the deal. Council meets again on April 16 to discuss the issue.

McComb Reinstates Auxiliary Police Force

4/10/18 – 5:13 A.M.

McComb is reactivating its auxiliary police force. Village council voted 5-1 to make the move Monday night. The village is now accepting applications for auxiliary police officers. Police Chief Greg Smith says he’s looking for three or four volunteers.

Once the volunteers get training, they’ll fill in the gaps when regular officers aren’t available.

Local Hospitals Lift Visitor Restrictions

4/10/18 – 5:04 A.M.

It hasn’t felt like spring yet, but there’s at least one sign that we’re getting away from winter. Flu season is winding down. As a result, Blanchard Valley Hospital and Bluffton Hospital have lifted visitor restrictions.

In January both facilities asked people not to bring children 14-years-old and younger to the hospital to avoid spreading the flu virus.

Culinary Class Being Offered By OSU Extension

Hancock County OSU Extension is offering new classes for culinary arts. Karen McDougall is teaching the class and said that you will learn a lot as well as get a meal.

McDougall said that there are only 12 seats available for each class. The classes are every Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Central Church of Christ. You can call McDougall at 419-422-3851 for more information or get signed up.

Lake Erie Expert Talks About Phosphorous Runoff, Says More Can Be Done

Algal blooms are a major concern for Lake Erie but Hancock County plays a role. Ohio Sea Grant director Dr. Christopher Winslow said that they want to see a 40% phosphorous reduction in Ohio rivers. He said that the Blanchard River is one of the contributors.

Winslow said studies show that agriculture is the leading cause of the nutrient run-off. He added that Ohio needs to find win-win solutions to reducing phosphorous runoff.

He added that Municipalities can change the way they treat water if it is high in phosphorous. It will also help if areas made the ground more porous to absorb and hold water.

Boil Water Advisory In Place For Three Findlay Streets

The Findlay Water Distribution Department has issued a boil water advisory for several streets in the city. The advisory affects addresses on the 100 block of Fair Street, the 300 blocks of North Cory and North Main Streets. You can find a full list of affected addresses below. The advisory is in place because of repair work on a water main on North Cory Street.

You should boil water for at least a minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or oral hygiene.

Cooper Tire And Rubber Company CFO Retiring

Cooper Tire and Rubber company’s CFO will be leaving the company later this year. Ginger Jones told the company that she will retire as a full-time executive and focus on serving on public company board of directors. She will stay with the company until she is replaced and an orderly transition is done.

Jones joined Cooper 2014 and served as the Senior Vice President as well as being the CFO. Cooper has started the search for her replacement both internally and externally.

Local Gas Prices Continue To Rise

4/9/18 – 7:31 A.M.

Local gas prices are up for a second straight week. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price for a gallon of regular in Findlay is $2.52. That’s up nine cents from last Monday, and up 10 cents over the last two weeks.

Ottawa drivers are paying $2.49 per gallon today. That’s the same price as Ottawa drivers were paying a week ago.

Local prices remain below the state average, which sits at $2.54 per gallon. That’s a seven-cent increase over the last seven days.

Putnam County Woman Facing Bank Fraud Charges

A Putnam County woman stands accused of stealing more than $900,000 from her company’s clients. Representatives for the U.S. Federal Court in Toledo and the FBI announced last week that they were charging 51-year-old Jennifer Edelbrock of Kalida with seven counts of bank fraud.

Edelbrock ran Edelbrock Enterprises, a payroll services and accounting company. Investigators say Edelbrock defrauded her clients of at least $914,000.

Part of her job was to hold money in trust to pay for her clients’ payroll expenses, including federal, state and local taxes. She allegedly took money from the trust accounts and transferred them to All Seasons Lawn and Recreation LLC, her husband’s business.

Second Suspect Arrested In Tiffin Shooting

4/9/18 – 6:43 A.M.

The suspect in a shooting in Tiffin late last month has turned himself into Columbus police.

20-year-old Hussein Mohamed allegedly took part in the attempted murder of two people on March 27. Police arrested John Moyler the day after the shooting. They say he was driving the car involved in the incident.

Mohamed will now face charges of attempted murder.
