Hancock Park Board Approves Shelter House Plan

4/11/18 – 9:08 A.M.

A shelter house replacement project at Riverbend Recreation area continues to move forward. The Hancock Park District Board of Commissioners met Tuesday to discuss the upcoming project. Construction should begin in May and will be complete within 150 days.

The new shelter will have room for six picnic tables and 48 people. It will also have an indoor fireplace.

The project will cost around $410,000. The Mariann Dana Younger Donor Advised Fund is giving $250,000 to the park district for the project.

Grants Will Help Pay For Findlay Road Expansions

4/11/18 – 6:49 A.M.

Grants will help pay for two road expansion projects in Findlay. The state is paying $733,000 to build extensions near the new Campbell Soup warehouse and the new Autoliv Nissin Brake Systems America plant. The companies will pay for the rest of the $1.25 million price tag on the projects.

Campbell Soup and Autoliv Nissin are also paying for the installation of water and sewer lines.

The state awarded the grant money because both companies are either creating or retaining jobs.

Findlay Man Posts Bond Following Arraignment On Rape Charge

4/11/18 – 5:31 A.M.

A Findlay man charged with rape, kidnapping, and assault is free on bond. 38-year-old Michael Lewis pleaded not guilty to the charges during an April 6 arraignment. He also posted the $91,000 bond.

Lewis owns part of Partitions Plus in Findlay.

He is currently living in South Carolina. A court order says he isn’t allowed to travel except to and from Findlay. Lewis has turned over his passport and waived extradition.

Cross Addresses Negative Campaign Ads, Accuses Opponent’s Husband Of Tampering With Sign

4/11/18 – 5:22 A.M.

Ohio House candidate Jon Cross has accused his opponent’s husband of tampering with one of his campaign signs. WKTN radio reports Cross held a press conference Tuesday to address negative campaign ads running against him. During the event, Cross said he saw Cheryl Buckland’s husband tampering with the sign Monday evening while he was leaving Findlay.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

In the meantime, Cross addressed accusations from a radio ad a political action committee is running against him. The ad says Cross was fired from a legislative aide job for falsifying time cards in 2003. Cross said he was unaware of what counted as work hours for the job. He added he clocked in for events he thought were work-related, causing the issue.

Cross and Buckland are running for the Republican nomination for the 83rd Ohio House District seat.

Findlay Man Indicted For Manslaughter Following December Bar Fight

4/11/18 – 5:01 A.M.

The Hancock County grand jury has indicted a Findlay man in connection to a death in late December. 23-year-old Devin Dennard faces a manslaughter charge.

Police accuse Dennard of attacking 53-year-old Gregory Hammer outside of the Walnut Saloon on December 16. Hammer died 15 days later at St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

Gregory’s brother, Darryl, was also attacked in the incident. He told police a group of men jumped them in the bar’s parking lot. Darryl Hammer suffered injuries to his face.

Zonta Spring Style Show Raising Money For SANE and Open Arms

04/10/18 – 9:02 P.M.

The Zonta Club of Findlay is hosting their Zonta Spring Style Show this Thursday. Zonta’s Maile Doyle said that there will be plenty to do there.

The event will also feature a showing of modern clothing for women of all shapes and sizes. The money raised from the event will support Open Arms and the SANE Program at Blanchard Valley Hospital.

Tickets are 30$ and the event will start at 6 p.m. at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts. You can find more information on their Facebook page.

Hancock County Commissioners Learn More About The Landfill Seeding Project

04/10/18 – 3:16 P.M.

The Hancock County Commissioners got more information this afternoon about the landfill project. Landfill manager Don Moses explained that they have an issue with soil erosion.

He also explained that using Deitering’s Landscape Inc. out of Leipsic is the best option.

Moses explained that the landfill has 4 to 1 slopes and that Dietering has the tools to properly do the job. He added that the project will cost about $2,500 an acre and will cover 18 acres.

Permitting Process For River Benching Process Continues To Move Forward

The permitting process continues for the Blanchard River flood reduction process. The Maumee Watershed Conservancy District got an update on the process Tuesday morning. Adam Hoff of Stantec Engineering says a public hearing on the project’s water quality impact is coming up soon…

Hoff says if all goes according to schedule they’ll hold a public hearing in late May. After that, they hope to put the project out to bid in June…

Stantec says the river benching project will lower the 100-year flood by about a foot in downtown Findlay.

The Conservancy is only working on improving the Blanchard’s flow through Findlay at this point. There hasn’t been any movement on proposed dry storage basins south of the city.

Sherri Garner Brumbaugh Elected As First Female President Of Local Boy Scouts Council

4/10/18 – 5:28 A.M.

A local Boy Scouts organization has its first female president. Members of the Boy Scouts of America Black Swamp Council recently elected Sherri Garner Brumbaugh to the role. The council president is the top volunteer position and chairs the board of directors for the local council. Brumbaugh previously served as the executive vice president.

Brumbaugh takes the place of Mark Miller, who just finished two terms as president.

Brumbaugh has volunteered at all levels of scouting, including den leader.
