Findlay-Hancock County Public Library Offering Japanese Film

You can celebrate Japanese culture in Findlay with a movie. The Findlay-Hancock County Public Library is showing a Japanese family movie for Japan Week. They will be showing From Up on Poppy Hill, a story about teens trying to save their school’s clubhouse.

The movie is from 2-4 p.m. in the Lindamood Room. The movie will be shown with some University of Findlay students present.

Sprague Endorsed By GOP For State Treasurer Seat

The Ohio GOP has thrown its support behind a state treasurer candidate from Findlay. The Courier reports that Robert Sprague has been endorsed by the Ohio Republican Party over his opponent, Sandra O’Brien. O’Brien is the former Ashtabula County Treasurer.

The GOP also endorsed Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine for governor over Lt. Governor Mary Taylor. O’Brien and Taylor are critical of the nominating process, pointing out that the committee only endorsed men.

Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center Open This Weekend

Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center at Riverbend Recreation Area will reopen for the first time in 2 years. The Courier reports that this is because it will reach the requirement snow base of 4 to 6 inches. You can rent snowshoes or cross-country skis for $7 per hour or $20 for per day.

The center will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday. It is in Shelter 3 of the big Oaks Area.

Local Expert Talks About How To Prevent Workplace And School Violence

Workplace and school violence is something most people don’t like to think of but knowing more about it can help prevent it. That was the message from the University of Findlay’s Randy Van Dyne of the All-Hazards Training Center.

Van Dyne explained that these types of situations are pre-meditated and usually stem from someone trying to get even with someone or something. He added that there is a continuum that they go through. This consists of forming ideas, planning, preparing, and implementing.

Van Dyne says that this allows time for prevention.

Van Dyne explained that a Behavioral Intervention Team can review information on workers. He added that it is important to have a team set up so that they can teach employees what to pay attention to and what to report.

Student Detained After Handgun Found In Mohawk School

2/9/18 – 5:33 A.M.

A report about a handgun in a student’s locker forced a temporary lockdown in the Sycamore Mohawk school district in Wyandot County Thursday afternoon. According to the district’s Facebook page, several students told Assistant Principal Brooke Bowlin that another student had a handgun in a backpack in a locker.

Wyandot County Sheriff’s deputies found a handgun in a locker and detained a student.

The district says there was no immediate threat to students, and students were released on time.

The incident remains under investigation

Putnam County Sizes Up Courthouse Renovations Options

Putnam County officials are looking at renovation options for the Putnam County Courthouse. The Lima News reports project manager Kevin Niese gave the commissioners a $941,000 estimate for work on the inside and outside of the building. The largest part of the project would include replacing broken tiles on the courthouse roof.

The work could also include putting a new membrane on a flat section of the roof, fixing the building facade, and building a new ramp to the main entrance among other items.

Hancock County Picks New Electric Supplier

2/9/18 – 5:18 A.M.

Hancock County has a new electric supplier for county-owned buildings. The county commissioners approved a deal with Dynegy Energy Services East during their Thursday meeting. The contract starts in May.

The county will see estimated savings of more than $24,700 the first year, more than $35,000 the second year and over $40,000 in the third year. That’s compared to their current contract with AEP.

Sprague To Take On Crowded Field In State Treasurer Race

State Representative Robert Sprague of Findlay will have competition in his bid to become state treasurer. Sandra O’Brien is also running as a Republican for the position, meaning they will face off in the May primary election. O’Brien is a former teacher and auditor in Ashtabula County. She won the Republican primary for state treasurer in 2006 but lost in the general election to Democrat Robert Cordray.

O’Brien also ran for secretary of state in 2010 but lost to Jon Husted.

Two Democrats are also running for state treasurer. Neil Patel of Westerville is running against Rob Richardson of Cincinnati.

Cooper Tire Enters Multi-Year Deal With Vietnamese Company.

02/08/18 – 11:41 A.M.

Cooper Tire and Rubber Company has entered a new agreement for the production of truck and bus radial tires. Cooper announced the multi-year manufacturing offtake agreement with Sailun Vietnam Co., Ltd today. The deal will allow the company to produce TBR tires for global markets. They will manufacture the tires under the Roadmaster, Dean, and Starfire brands.

Cooper also announced that they will open a new North America distribution center dedicated to TBR tires. The new facility will be in San Bernardino, California.
