Findlay City Schools To Host A Tech Fair Later This Year

Findlay City Schools will have its first ever tech fair this August. They will be inviting 250 educators from the area to take part in the series. Superintendent Ed Kurt explained that this will help teach local educators how to implement technology into their lesson plans.

Kurt added that their will be national speakers coming to present. More details will become available over the next few weeks with registration available in March.

Findlay City Schools Hosting Competition So Area Students Can Learn About Cyber Security

Findlay City Schools is partnering with the Ohio Cyber Collaborative Committee to teach students about cyber security. Director of information technology Martin White explained that its important to start teaching kids about cyber technology at a young age.

Findlay City Schools will be hosting a competition in which students from area schools and colleges will learn different aspects of cyber security. White explained that this gives students hands-on experience.

There will also be a free presentation on cyber security provided by representatives of OC3.

Registration for the competition will start at 8:30 a.m. and the competition will last until 4 p.m. The presentation will be from 9-10 a.m. Both events are being held in the Donnell Middle School.

Councilwoman Holly Frische Discusses Estimated Income Tax Payments

Findlay Councilwoman Holly Frische joined WFIN’s Chris Oaks to discuss estimated tax payments and why she opposes it. She said that companies allowed to skip paying their taxes on a quarterly basis out of fear.

She added that it was put in place in 2009 as a knee-jerk reaction to an incident in 2007 where the city almost couldn’t repay a company that overpaid their taxes.

Frische explained that the city has money to put into the appropriate income tax refund accounts to eliminate this practice.

Frische said that if the policy remains in place there needs to be an official policy and procedure laid out for everyone to understand.

 

One Injured When SUV Hits Home In Seneca County

2/12/18 – 5:35 A.M.

An SUV hit a house near Bascom late last week, injuring one person. The State Highway Patrol reports the incident happened at 7517 West State Route 18 around 9 a.m. Friday.

28-year-old Samantha Newlove was driving west on the highway when she went off the road and hit the home. Bascom EMS took her passenger, 24-year-old Jeanette Zavala of Fostoria to Mercy Health Tiffin Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Troopers cited Newlove for driving without reasonable control.

Local Gas Prices Decline Over The Last Week

2/12/18 – 5:26 A.M.

Local gas prices are down as we start the week. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price for a gallon of regular in Findlay is $2.31 today. That’s down 19 cents from last Monday and down 20 cents from last week’s highest prices. A month ago we were paying $2.54 per gallon.

Drivers in Ottawa report paying $2.29 per gallon today. That’s a 16 cent decline over the last seven days.

Local prices remain below the state average, which sits at $2.36 per gallon. That’s down 10 cents over the last week.

Despite Icy Sunday Morning Conditions, Relatively Few Crashes Reported

Local law enforcement only dealt with a handful of crashes as area residents braved icy roads Sunday morning. Fortunately, no local law enforcement agencies saw any major crashes.

The Findlay Police Department responded to at least five minor accidents Sunday morning. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol also dealt with a couple of slide-off crashes.

The Courier reports law enforcement in Putnam, Wyandot, and Wood Counties also reported relatively few crashes given the icy Sunday morning conditions.

Hancock County Sheriff’s Office Scores High On Survey

A recent survey about the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office garnered good results. The Courier reports those who took the survey generally had a positive opinion about the agency.

Crime prevention deputy Beth Baker tells the newspaper the office received four or five stars on most of the 13 questions. The topics ranged from questions about outreach to questions about interactions with deputies. Participants could also write comments.

161 people took the survey. 85 percent of those who took part were satisfied with the overall performance of the sheriff’s office. Around 11 percent had a negative opinion about the agency.

UPDATED: Fox Street Murder Remains Under Investigation

UPDATE – 3:26 P.M.

The investigation continues into a Findlay murder. The Findlay Police Department reports the shooting happened at 1316 Fox Street over the weekend. Someone called 911 from that address around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Officers found the body of 56-year-old Jeffery Gary in the home. The autopsy report shows that he suffered 2 gunshot wounds. Investigators say multiple suspects confronted Gary and shot him. They then ran from the residence. According to the police report, the suspects had their faces covered but police believe they were men.
