Findlay is celebrating Japan Week and there are many options for you to experience Japanese culture. There are events from now until February 11. Many of these events are free and open to the public. The headline event is a Taiko performance on February 5th at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts. The drummers will start performing at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $25.

The Cleveland Indians are getting rid of the Chief Wahoo logo from their uniforms. The Associated Press reports that the logo is coming off the team’s sleeves and caps in the 2019 season. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that the league is dedicated to building a culture of diversity.
The team has been under growing pressure to eliminate Chief Wahoo. The logo had been in use since 1947.

February is heart health month and there’s an event coming up to get men focused on keeping their heart healthy. The Heart Association’s Kerri Rochelle explained that heart disease isn’t gender biased but that this event focuses on men.
Rochelle said that there will be an event focused on women coming up in the next few weeks. The Red Tie event is a free breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Blanchard Valley Hospital. However, you need to RSVP by the end of today at tmika@bvhealthsystem.org.

Findlay Mayor Lydia Mihalik got to head to the nation’s capital to talk with the mayors of other cities. She explained that Findlay’s growth has caused new problems to emerge.
Mihalik said the opioid crisis, childhood hunger, and transportation are just a few of these key issues. She added that talking about issues such as childhood hunger helps lead to solutions.
Mihalik talked about a public-private partnership between Denver, Colorado and Pepsi Co. that is focused on ending childhood hunger in that city. She said that going to these meetings helps cities from all over by getting mayors to communicate.

Local gas prices are higher as we start the new week. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price for a gallon of regular in Findlay is $2.36 today. That’s up seven cents from last Monday. A month ago we were paying around $2.51 per gallon.
Drivers in Ottawa report paying $2.39 for a gallon of regular. That’s a five cent increase over the last week.
Local prices are below the state average, which sits at $2.43 per gallon. The state average is up five cents from last Monday.
1/29/18 – 7:36 A.M.
Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in a crash that took the life of a Forest man late last week. The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office reports the crash happened around 8:50 p.m. on County Road 20 just west of the village.
Kevin Sampson was driving east when he drove off the side of the road. He overcorrected and lost control. Sampson’s pickup truck began to roll, ejecting him from the cab.
A medical helicopter took Sampson to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, but he died a few hours after he arrived.
1/29/18 – 7:15 A.M.
Findlay police officers are investigating an early morning armed robbery in the city. Lt. Robert Ring says the incident happened in the 100 block of Crystal Avenue just before 3:30 a.m.
The victim was walking in the area when two men approached him and asked for money. When the victim said he didn’t have any, one of the suspects pulled out a black handgun and demanded the man’s wallet and cell phone. The suspects took some items from the victim and ran away.
Police say one of the suspects was a tall white man. The other was a shorter Hispanic man.
The case remains under investigation.

A new school plans to open in Bowling Green this fall. The Courier reports organizers of Sleek Academy will focus on project-based learning and a STEAM curriculum. Founder Erica Sleek says the school will teach to a child’s strengths.
For example, while a lesson might focus on the lobes of the brain, the children in the class might all do different styles of assignments while learning about the same subject.
Plans for the school began after parents from Sleek’s early education learning center expressed concern about their children not enjoying or learning much in traditional classrooms.

The Hardin County Crime Task Force made a large meth bust last week. The agency says it seized around 360 grams, or a little under a pound of the drug in a home at 16925 Roundhead Township Road 39 on Wednesday.
Authorities say the street value of the drug is was around $10,000.
Officers arrested one person. They haven’t made his name public.
1/29/18 – 5:33 A.M.
A weekend fire will close a Findlay business for a few weeks. Findlay firefighters responded to Keith’s Dugout at 3112 North Main Street around 2:45 a.m. Sunday. The blaze caused heavy damage in a utility room and also damaged the HVAC and electrical systems.
The total damage estimate is $85,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
