German Exchange Student Enjoyed His Time With Findlay High School

Findlay High School had a German foreign exchange student study over the fall semester. The Courier’s Kathryne Rubright said it runs in Philippe Tilmus’ (Till-muss) family.

Rubright said Tilmus enjoyed how honor classes work here in the United States.

Tilmus also enjoyed going to football games and practicing with the golf team.

Two Findlay Men Injured In Saturday Assault

12/18/17 – 5:16 P.M.

A Saturday assault in the Walnut Saloon parking lot in Findlay injured two men. The Findlay Police Department reports the officers found 53-year-old Gregory Hammer and his brother, 47-year-old Darryl Hammer in the lot. Gregory was unconscious with injuries to his head. Darryl had injuries to his face.

Darryl told officers that the two were assaulted by multiple men, who fled before police arrived. Gregory was taken to Blanchard Valley and was later taken by Lifeflight to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Toledo.

Police urge any witnesses to contact the Findlay Police Department at 419-424-7150.

Two Injured In Dunkirk Assault

12/18/17 – 4:45 P.M.

A bar fight escalated into an assault involving a vehicle last Friday. WKTN radio reports that two people were injured in the incident in Dunkirk. Hardin County Sheriff Keith Everhart said the two were taken to Blanchard Valley Hospital. They have since been released.

No other details have been released pending the investigation. Everhart told WKTN that detectives are interviewing the victims and the suspects. He expects more information will be released later this week.

Mayor Mihalik Talks About Findlay’s 2018 Budget And Possible Shortfall

Findlay’s budget projection shows revenue falling short of expenses for the second year running. Mayor Lydia Mihalik said that the city will carry on business as usual.

Mihalik said that despite the shortfall they haven’t cut any funds.

Mihalik said that they won’t be deficit spending. She explained that 2017 could have a surplus once the books are balanced. 2017 was supposed to be a deficit year as well.

Departments have been urged to minimize spending but haven’t lost any funds.

Local Gas Prices Continue To Fall

12/18/17 – 6:59 A.M.

Local gas prices continue to slide and are at their lowest point since late August. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price for a gallon of regular in Findlay is $2.16 today. That’s down 15 cents over the last week. Prices are 44 cents lower than they were a month ago.

Ottawa drivers report paying $2.19 per gallon today. That’s a 10 cent drop from last Monday.

Local prices remain below the state average, which sits at $2.19. The state average has fallen 10 cents over the last seven days.

Wood County Man Sentenced On Rape Charges

12/18/17 – 6:49 A.M.

A Wood County man pleaded guilty to five counts of rape last week. The Sentinel-Tribune reports 22-year-old Dakoda Bullis of Weston will serve four consecutive life sentences.

The Wood County grand jury indicted Bullis over the summer. According to the indictment, two counts involved a victim between 6 and 7-years-old. Another victim was 9-years-old at the time. The incidents took place between October of 2013 and July 1 of this year.

Despite the life sentence, Bullis is eligible for parole in 40 years.

Ottawa Village Council Discusses Cost Of Office Equipment

12/18/17 – 5:38 A.M.

Ottawa’s village council recently debated the expense of office equipment at the water treatment plant. The Putnam County Sentinel reports Council President David Michel asked why the table and four chairs cost $2,300. Public Works Supervisor Dan Lehman said it served as a conference table at the village’s water treatment plant.

Mayor Dean Meyer told council he wasn’t upset by the cost. He added that Water Director Doug Schroeder, “knows what he needs. I’m not going to micromanage what he does.” He went on to say, “If he’d run it by me, I’d give him my opinion, but that’s his baby. It’s coming out of his budget. He knows that budget is tight, so I’m going to trust him.”

Schroeder says the table is a functional tool where they map out plans every day and meet with the EPA.

Year In Review: The Boot Project Grows

We begin our look back at 2017 today, recapping the top stories of the year as suggested by our listeners. Our first story looks back at the ongoing Boot school safety effort.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office started off the year with a $50,000 donation from Marathon Petroleum for the Boot project. Other companies and organizations like Ohio Logistics and the Community Foundation would follow suit throughout the year.

The sheriff’s office started installing the devices in August. Cory-Rawson saw the first installations in the county.

The Boot is a device that can block a door during an active shooter situation or other emergencies. It can withstand 16,000 pounds of pressure.
