Local Gas Prices Up To Start The New Week

12/11/17 – 6:49 A.M.

Local gas prices are up as we start the new work week. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price for a gallon of regular in Findlay is $2.31 today. That’s a 12 cent increase over last Monday, but down 11 cents from last week’s highest prices. A month ago we were paying around $2.43 per gallon.

Drivers in Ottawa report paying $2.29 per gallon today. That’s up five cents from last Monday.

Local prices are below the state average, which stands at $2.37 for a gallon of regular. That’s up seven cents over the last seven days.

BGSU Board Approves New Tuition Plan

The Bowling Green State University board of trustees approved a new tuition plan late last week. The program locks tuition, course and class fees, and room and board rates for the duration of a student’s undergraduate career.

Outgoing president Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey said, “with the Falcon Tuition Guarantee Plan, what they pay as freshmen will be what they continue to pay as seniors, so they can budget accordingly.”

BGSU has not raised tuition since the fall of 2013.

Ottawa Whirlpool Plant Looking For Maintenance Workers

The Whirlpool plant in Ottawa is looking for maintenance workers. The facility is holding an open house for anyone interested on Tuesday. You can stop by between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. or 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Plant leader Jenni Hanna tells WLIO TV that the company is looking for people who can work with their state of the art equipment. She added they have many workers approaching retirement and are looking for people to take their place in the future.

Saturday Fire Destroys Fostoria Home

12/11/17 – 5:25 A.M.

A weekend fire destroyed a home in Fostoria. Firefighters responded to 615 Maple Street around 5 a.m. Saturday. Interim Fostoria Fire Chief Brian Herbert says it looks like the blaze started in the back porch area of the home.

Herbert says only three men were on duty when the fire began. They called in all off-duty firefighters and the Tiffin Fire Department to help. Water issues didn’t help firefighters out either. The closest hydrant to the house did not supply enough water initially.

The home’s resident escaped safely with the family dog. Investigators haven’t determined the cause of the blaze.

One Killed In Sunday Afternoon Fire In Fostoria

12/11/17 – 5:16 A.M.

The investigation continues today after a Sunday fire killed a woman in Fostoria. Firefighters responded to a home at 295 Boston Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Interim Fire Chief Brian Herbert says they found the body of a woman in the bedroom of the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities don’t believe there was foul play involved. The State Fire Marshall’s Office is helping with the investigation because someone was killed in the blaze.

Sunday Fire Kills Two In Hancock County

12/11/17 – 5:03 A.M.

A Sunday fire took the lives of two people in Hancock County. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says firefighters responded to a home at 15043 County Road 26 around 2 a.m.

Firefighters found two bodies in the home after they extinguished the flames. The sheriff’s office has not identified the bodies yet. The State Fire Marshall’s Office is helping with the investigation.

The Hancock County Auditor’s website says Elizabeth Wilkins owns the mobile home.

BGSU President Stepping Down

12/11/17 – 4:27 A.M.

Bowling Green State University President Mary Ellen Mazey is stepping down. Her last day is December 31st. The Board of Trustees voted Friday to grant Mazey the title of president emeritus due to her contributions to the university. Board members say they expect to start searching for her successor this spring.

Bridge Bereavement Services Wants To Help You Grieve Over The Holiday

Bridge Bereavement Services is hosting a presentation focusing on how people can prepare for the holidays while grieving. Coordinator Niki SIdle said that the holidays can be rough.

Sidle added that there are many things around the holidays that can remind you that your loved one is gone. Sidle said that missing a loved one can be tough as your family gathers together.

The presentation will help to cope with this grief over the holidays. It will be December 18 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the Marathon Auditorium of Blanchard Valley Hospital. Attendees will get the chance to make a luminary to light in honor of the loved one.

Bob Latta Discusses Net Neutrality On WFIN

Net Neutrality has been a big topic in Congress lately as they look to remove it. Supporters say that net neutrality keeps internet providers from blocking, slowing down, or speeding up websites. Congressman Bob Latta was on WFIN and said the issue is that the government regulates the internet like it’s a utility.

Latta said that by removing the legislation it will be put under the control of the Federal Trade Commission.

Latta explained that the FTC is better equipped to handle internet regulations than the FCC, who took over under Obama. He added that he thinks net neutrality is a good policy but could be handled better.
