Friends Of Santa Looking To Help Local Families

Friends of Santa is looking for your help in giving families in need a merry Christmas. The group has set up many “Wishing Trees” in the community. You can take one or more of the wishes and return the requested item to the location of the tree. If you do take a wish, try to fulfill it as soon as possible for a final pickup next Tuesday.

American Red Cross Responds To Recent Fires

The American Red Cross is working to cut down fire deaths after 8 fires killed 3 people last weekend. American Red Cross North Central Ohio Chapter executive director Todd James said that they want to cut fatalities in half. The easiest way to do so is to make sure people have working smoke alarms. With this in mind, the Red Cross has decided to install smoke alarms in people’s homes for free.

To make an appointment for smoke alarm installation, you can call the American Red Cross at 844-207-4059. They will come and install the smoke alarm for free, help you make a plan of escape, and prepare for other emergencies.

Carey School Board Member Honored For Two Decades Of Service

A longtime Carey school board member said “goodbye” Monday night. After 20 years on the board, Mark Armstrong attended his final meeting. The Courier reports the board gave Armstrong a clock plaque to show their appreciation.

Armstrong thanked his family, the school board, district administration, the community and students for their support during his tenure.

Food Boxes Available For Residents In Pandora-Gilboa School District

Churches in the Pandora-Gilboa area are offering food boxes for households in need in the school district. The boxes include things like eggs, bread, milk and toilet paper. They also include items that promote a healthy diet.

To receive a box you can call the Grace Mennonite Church at (419)384-3038 no later than Friday.

The box pickup date is December 23 between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

McComb Workers Could Get Raises

Full-time municipal workers in McComb could see pay raises in 2018. The Courier reports the village’s finance committee recommended 2 percent pay increases for employees during a Monday meeting. The council could vote on the suggestion at a future meeting and make the raises retroactive to January 1 if the measure passes.

Council says village workers haven’t had a raise in two years.

Waterline Work Closes Findlay Intersection

You’ll want to avoid the intersection of Davis Street and Morey Avenue in Findlay today. Crews are closing the intersection for a waterline project between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. You can expect short delays in the area for the next couple of weeks.

Road 313 Bridge Reopens Following Monday Crash

12/12/17 – 4:54 A.M.

A Hancock County bridge was temporarily closed following a semi crash Monday evening. The State Highway Patrol reports Eddie Perez of Pontiac, Michigan, was driving north on I-75 around 4:45 p.m. when he fell asleep. His truck went off the right side of the interstate and up the County Road 313 overpass embankment, hitting the bridge.

Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to get Perez out of his truck. Hanco EMS took him to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

State Troopers cited Perez for failure to control.

The Hancock County Engineer’s Office had to temporarily close the bridge to inspect it for any structural problems.

Findlay City Schools Talks Insurance, Fixing Auxiliary Gym

Findlay City School Board talked about repairs for the schools after last months storm during their Monday meeting. Superintendent Ed Kurt said that the school will have to pay a $14,000 deductible.

During the meeting, the school board approved a bid from Helms Construction to fix the high school auxiliary gym. That will amount to over $38,900. Kurt said that the school has been suffering without it.

Kurt added that they will continue to work with the insurance company as they assess further damage to the schools. So far there has been over $250,000 of damage assessed and Kurt explained that he thinks this number will rise.

Women’s Mentoring Connections To Discuss Fear, Motivation, And Intuition Thursday

Women’s Mentoring Connections will have an event to discuss conquering fears this Thursday. The event will feature a multi-generational panel of women from various professional backgrounds. These women will share their experiences and advice on fear, motivation, and intuition.

The Findlay-Hancock County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event from 8 – 9:30 a.m. at Birchaven Retirement Village Clubhouse. To register visit findlayhancockchamber.com or call 419-422-3313. Admission to the program is free but any donation will help benefit the Salvation Army.

Findlay Fire Inspector Offers Advice On Winter Fire Prevention

With structure fires on the rise, Findlay Fire Department has advice on protecting yourself and your belongings. Findlay Fire Inspector Kevin Shenise (Sheh-knees) said that you’ll want to make sure your appliances are up to date.

He also said that having a plan of escape is important. Also if there is a fire, once you are outside you should stay outside.
