Indictments for felony crimes are on the rise in Hancock County. The Courier’s Eileen McClory said that the opioid epidemic is playing a key role.

She added that the county expects between 370 and 390 indictments by the end of the year. Last year there were only 355 indictments. There have been over 200 drug-related indictments this year.

McClory said that this has significantly increased the workload of the criminal justice system.

McClory added that many departments are looking to hire extra staff members to help with the workload. Some departments have already hired people to help out or put the workload onto unpaid interns.
