The McComb Region Heart & Soul team has awarded the first of five mini-grants to the McComb Church of Christ. The church will use the $1,200 grant to begin a family-friendly movie and concert series in the village park. The first movie will be shown this fall and the date will be announced.
The money comes from the remaining amount of the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation’s $136,000 grant. That money was awarded to the McComb Region Heart & Soul in 2015.

Gateway Church in Findlay is still collecting items for people affected by Hurricane Irma. Kevin Gruhbinski explained that they are looking for specific items.
He added that they are also taking cleaning supplies. You can drop off the items at the Gateway Church on County Road 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. They will also be available 6-8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. They will be taking a truck to Florida to drop the items off next weekend.

Another flood-damaged building in Findlay is coming down. The Hancock County Commissioners voted to spend around $4,500 to buy property at 107 Shinkle Street. The 2007 flood damaged the home there and it was never fixed. Other floods have continued to cause further damage to the building.
The county is using money from the flood mitigation account to pay for the property.

The long-time director of the City Mission of Findlay stepped down recently. The Courier reports Phil Arnold announced his resignation earlier this month. Arnold was the director of Findlay’s homeless shelter for 23 years.

The University of Findlay has a new member on its board of trustees. The school named Hancock Federal Credit Union president Dan Kennard to the board this week. Kennard is serving on the Student Affairs Committee. He replaces former board of trustees member James Appold.
Kennard is also the co-chair of the Backyard Mission Trip. He’s lived in Findlay since 1987.
9/28/17 – 5:04 A.M.
We’re learning more about a stabbing incident in the Planet Fitness parking lot from last weekend. The Findlay Police Department tells the Courier the two men involved in the incident have had problems with each other before. However, they didn’t give any other details about that.
Investigators say 41-year-old Jason Turner suffered injuries to his head, upper back, and shoulders. Police expect him to fully recover. 32-year-old Michael Smith was also involved in the incident and received treatment at Blanchard Valley Hospital for unspecified injuries.
The police department hasn’t made any arrests in the case. They are collecting evidence and will hand it over to the Hancock County Prosecutor.

9/28/17 – 4:49 A.M. UPDATE
A Bluffton woman died in a crash on County Road 216 in Washington Township Wednesday morning. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports that they responded to the one-vehicle accident around 6 a.m. 22-year-old Ashley Deardorff was heading westbound on County Road 216 when she went into a curve and lost control. She went off the south side of the road and rolled several times. She was trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation

Driving under the influence is a bad thing to do but now those that do are more likely to get caught. The Courier’s Eileen McClory says that there’s been an increase of arrests.
McClory said that the increased training has allowed officers to better tell when someone is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She added that the State Highway Patrol has reported fewer accidents involving substance abuse.

October is coming in fast which means the November general election isn’t too far behind. Hancock County Board of Elections Chair Elizabeth Candler said that early voting will be starting in a few weeks.
She added that they are taking applications for people to work the polls.
She added that the position is paid $130 a day. People hired into a leadership position at the polls will make an extra $10.
