Findlay Rotary Club Discusses Healthcare Reform With Local Author And Expert

One of the co-authors of “A Prescription for Healthcare Reform” spoke to the Findlay Rotary Club Monday. Bill Ruse claimed that reforming healthcare will involve having a multi-pronged approach.

He added that there should be greater use of local health departments and reduce the cost of pharmaceuticals. He also said that the billing system for health care needs to be reformed.

He added that if Congress follows the steps in the book, it could save over a half trillion dollars.

Ruse said that he and co-author Don Stanloski have sent their book to lawmakers and the president. He added that this is not a single-payer system.

Construction Started On Casey’s General Store In Ottawa

09/18/17 – 11:22 P.M.

Construction started on a food and fuel chain in Ottawa earlier this month. The Lima News reports that Lawrence Building Corp started the construction for Casey’s General Store on September 4. They are working on foundation after they tear down the old buildings on the property. The building will be located at 730 North Taft Street.

Project Superintendent Dustin Hughes told the newspaper the building will start going up in mid-October. The business will have a cold opening around February.

Armed Robbery In Beaverdam Remains Under Investigation

9/18/17 – 7:32 A.M.

The investigation continues into an armed robbery attempt in Beaverdam. The Lima News reports the incident took place at the Dollar General store in the village last Wednesday around 3:20 p.m.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Office says two black men wearing hooded sweatshirts came into the store and walked around the business while the cashier checked out other customers. During that time they grabbed chrome skeleton Halloween masks from a display and put them on.

After other customers left one man pulled out a small silver handgun and demanded money from the cash register. The man fired a round in the direction of the cashier. As the woman ran away the other suspect fired a round in her direction. Neither shot hit the employee, who was able to hide in a small office.

Teenager Dies In Crash South Of Columbus Grove

9/181/17 – 7:16 A.M.

A one-car crash south of Columbus Grove took the life of an Allen County teenager over the weekend. The State Highway Patrol reports the crash happened on Slabtown Road near Eversole Road around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

16-year-old Carter Vandersall of Lima was driving north on Slabtown when he went off the left side of the road and overcorrected. His car went off the right side of the road and rolled over. Vandersall was not wearing a seatbelt and the crash threw him from his vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.

Small Fire Reported At Findlay Business Over The Weekend

9/18/17 – 6:52 A.M.

A small fire at a Findlay business sent one person to the hospital and damaged equipment over the weekend. Findlay firefighters responded to Superior Trim at 5500 Fostoria Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

An employee put out a fire in an oven at the business. The employee received treatment at Blanchard Valley Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters set up ventilation to clear up the smoke.

Local Gas Prices Continue To Fall

9/18/17 – 6:45 A.M.

Local gas prices continue to fall from their post-Hurricane Harvey highs. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price in Findlay today is $2.28 per gallon. That’s down 10 cents from last week and nearly 20 cents over the last two weeks.

Prices in Ottawa continue to fall as well. The average price for a gallon of regular is $2.29 today, down 10 cents from last Monday.

Local prices are below the state average, which sits at $2.35 per gallon. That’s a 12 cent decline over the last seven days.

Several Road Resurfacing Projects Start In Putnam County This Week

9/18/17 – 5:39 A.M.

You’ll see plenty of lane restrictions on highways in Putnam County this week. ODOT says pavement repair is taking place in several areas starting today. Crews will reduce lanes on U.S. 224 throughout the county, State Route 189 between Route 190 and Route 115, and State Route 114 and Kalida.

Road work is also taking place on State Route 115 from U.S. 224 to Route 15, State Route 613 from Route 108 to Route 65, and State Route 694 east of the intersection with Route 115.

Road Projects Continue In Hancock County This Week

9/18/17 – 5:33 A.M.

Another week of road work kicks off in Hancock County today. While there are no major changes to the I-75 widening project this week, there are plenty of other areas to look out for. ODOT is closing State Route 103 just east of Bluffton for five days for a culvert replacement.

Other highway closures in the county include the State Route 186 overlap with State Route 235 in McComb. That closed on September 14 and should reopen this week. The bridge on State Route 12 east of Benton Ridge remains closed for repair work.

Lane reductions continue in other areas. Construction crews are narrowing the northbound lanes of I-75 north of Bluffton for curb and guardrail replacement. Crews are also continuing center-line rumble strip installation on U.S. 224 between State Route 235 and Findlay, U.S. 224 from Findlay to the Seneca County line, and on State Route 12 from Findlay to Fostoria.

You’ll also see lane reductions on State Route 235 from the Hardin County line to County Road 304. Crews continue to place a median cable barrier along U.S. 68 between the Findlay Airport and Eagle Creek.

Bicyclist Injured In Weekend Crash

9/18/17 – 5:16 A.M.

A pickup truck hit a Findlay bicyclist Saturday morning. The Findlay Police Department says the crash happened on State Route 568 near Marion Township Road 234 around 7:50 a.m. Saturday.

84-year-old Thomas Garza Jr. of Findlay was driving his pickup truck east on the highway when his side mirror clipped 63-year-old Marc Arce (AR-cee), knocking him off his bike. Hanco EMS took Arce to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

One Injured In Sunday Crash North Of Findlay

9/18/17 – 5:07 A.M.

A two-car crash injured an Arcadia man Sunday afternoon. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports the collision happened at the intersection of County Road 216 and Allen Township Road 230 around 4:40 p.m.

54-year-old Andres Garcia Jr. of North Baltimore was driving a Jeep northbound on Township Road 230 when he ran a stop sign at the intersection and hit a car driven by 60-year-old Cecil Harold Jr. Harold received treatment at the scene of the crash.

Deputies cited Garcia with failure to yield.
