Robertson added that the jail expansion is a need and not a want. He explained that the beds in the Hancock County Jail are full and it costs money to transport inmates to and from other county jails.

He added that they are also having to release felons because they can’t keep them in the jail due to the lack of space. Robertson used the example of a felon released back to Michigan a few weeks prior. He said that this sends the wrong message about Hancock County not being tough on crime.

Robertson also addressed the concerns of why the tax will be over a 20 year period instead of the previous 10 year tax. He said that they will need a source of long term income to ensure the jail expansion.

Robertson added that it is a use tax which means that the money will go towards capital improvement and operations. It cannot be saved.

Net sales for the quarter were $721 million, down from $740 million in 2016. A release from the company says higher sales volumes for the international segment were offset by lower volumes in North America. Sales volumes were higher in the second quarter than they were in the first quarter.

Raw material costs increased by $60 million compared to 2016 numbers. CEO Brad Hughes says, “The tire industry continues to face turbulence in the U.S. market in the form of raw material cost variability, weak trends in retail sell-out of tires to consumers, elevated inventory in the channels and a fluid pricing and promotional landscape.”

River Cleanup Notice Causes Some Confusion In Fostoria

8/4/17 – 6:56 A.M.

A recent letter about river cleanup assessments confused some Fostoria residents. The Review-Times reports many people got notices about the assessments in the mail this week. The project calls for maintenance on the east and south branches of the Portage River.

However, it turns out those who got the notice won’t actually have to pay anything. Fostoria is paying for the assessments through its storm sewer fund. City Engineer Dan Thornton tells the newspaper the project planning finished in 2015. He adds many people may have simply forgotten about it.

The estimated assessment for Fostoria properties is a little more than $46,000.
