Findlay To Host National Baseball Game For Children With Special Needs

Findlay has been chosen to host the 2018 National All Star Game for the Miracle league. Miracle League Board President Greg Herold said that it will bring in a lot of people.

He said that the game is a weekend of activities for the players.

Miracle League is an organization allowing those with special needs to play baseball in an accepting environment.

Findlay Officer Offers Advice On Spotting Counterfeit Money

Counterfeit money is a problem affecting many businesses but there are ways to protect yourself. Findlay Crime Prevention Officer Brian White said that there are things you can look for.

He added that you can look for water markings and security strips. These are hard to replicate.

White said that you should call the police if you get a fake bill. He added that you don’t have to worry about getting charged if you didn’t make it.

You should also refuse to accept the bill. If you do then it is yours and it will be confiscated.

Mosquitoes Carrying The West Nile Virus Confirmed In Hancock County

Hancock Public Health is warning residents of a mosquito pool that tested positive for West Nile. The pool was collected in the Mt. Blanchard area of the county. So far there have been no human cases of the mosquito-borne disease. Hancock Public Health has contacted local officials and given them mosquito protection information. Health Commissioner Karim Baroudi said that there isn’t much to worry about.

You can protect yourself by removing standing water from around your property. You should also limit outside activities during dusk and dawn, and use insect repellent containing DEET when you are outside.

Downtown Findlay Businesses Want Cardboard Recycling Bin

Some downtown Findlay business owners want a better way to deal with cardboard in their trash. County Commissioner Tim Bechtol says the Downtown Findlay Improvement District talked about the issue at a Thursday meeting…

Bechtol says the group would like to see a cardboard recycling bin within walking distance for most businesses in the downtown area. The catch is finding space for the bin and making sure no one is using it to throw away other trash.

Litter Landing on Sandusky Street Street currently accepts cardboard for recycling.

Ag Society Revises Plans For New Building At Fairgrounds

The Hancock County Agricultural Society presented plans for a slightly scaled back version of a new building at the fairgrounds to the Findlay City Planning Commission Thursday. The new plan calls for a 15,000 square foot facility on the north side of the fairgrounds. The original plans called for a nearly 17,000 square foot building. Agricultural Society operations manager Dave Thomas tells the Courier budget concerns prompted the change.

The building will still host receptions, shows, and seminars. The new plan does away with a covered porch.

Construction should start after this year’s Hancock County Fair.

Auto Parts Manufacturer Plans New Findlay Location

An auto parts maker in Findlay could move to a new location in the city. The Findlay City Planning Commission heard plans for a 194,000 square foot warehouse space at the southwest corner of Bigelow Avenue and Bright Road during their Thursday meeting. Autoliv Nissin Brake Systems America is interested in moving from its location on Industrial Drive to the new location.

Autoliv plans to start construction in October. The new building could open by September of 2018.

Recall Notice Issued For Infant & Toddler Swimsuits Sold At Meijer

If you bought your child a swimsuit at Meijer this summer it might be under a recall. Media partner WTOL-11 reports the recall involves the Wave Zone one-piece, zip-back swimsuit. Meijer said it had received 11 reports of the snaps detaching from the back of the swimsuit, posing a choking hazard for children.

The swimsuits for toddlers and infants have a zipper on the back and four snaps on the bottom and came in four colors. They include blue and gray with a shark on the front; white and navy stripes with an anchor pattern; pink and teal with a strawberry on the front; pink arms with a multi-colored fish pattern.

You can take the swimsuits back to Meijer for a full refund.

Two Injured In Crash Involving State Patrol Cruiser

8/10/17 – 5:15 A.M.

A two-car crash involving a State Patrol cruiser injured two people in Wood County Wednesday morning. The State Highway Patrol says the collision happened around 6:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate between Bowling Green and U.S. 6.

52-year-old James Tounage of Detroit, Michigan was driving south when he became distracted and drove into the median. His car hit a stopped cruiser driven by 42-year-old Philip Mohre of the Findlay Patrol post. An EMS crew took Tounage and his passenger to Wood County Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Mohre was not hurt in the crash.

Troopers cited Tounage for failure to control.

No One Files To Run For Findlay School Board Seats

8/10/17 – 5:06 A.M.

Two Findlay City School board seats are up for election this year, and it appears no one wants them. The Courier reports no one filed to run for the board by Wednesday’s deadline to file. The seats held by Shane Pochard and Barb Dysinger are up for election. Pochard announced on Monday he wasn’t running for reelection. Dysinger hasn’t commented on her plans.

If you’re interested you have until August 28 to file as a write-in candidate.

The last contested school board race happened in 2011.

Several Issues Will Be On Hancock County Ballots This Fall

8/10/17 – 4:59 A.M.

Wednesday was the deadline to put issues on the November ballot. Hancock County submitted paperwork for two sales tax issues. One issue asks voters to approve a 10-year, quarter-percent sales tax that the commissioners would earmark for flood mitigation. The second issue is a 20-year, quarter percent tax to pay for expanding the Hancock County Jail, and construction of a new county office building.

Elsewhere, Fostoria is asking voters to approve a five year, 6-mill levy for current expenses. It’s part of a five-year fiscal recovery plan for the city. The money would pay for safety services.

The Northwest Hancock Joint Fire District is asking residents to approve a five year, 2-mill levy for fire protection.

Mount Blanchard is placing a 2-mill, five-year levy for parks and recreational purposes.

The Appleseed Joint Ambulance District has a five-year, .6-mill levy for ambulance and emergency medical services.
