Fostoria Man Killed Trying To Break Up Fight Between Dogs

7/24/17 – 7:17 A.M.

A Fostoria man lost his life last week when he tried to break up a fight between two pit bulls. Media partner WTOL-11 reports the incident happened just after 11 p.m. Thursday on Davoli Street. 60-year-old Michael Parks let his dog out, when she suddenly ran across the street and began attacking another dog, who was walking on a leash with its owner.

One of the dogs bit Parks’ dialysis shunt, causing him to bleed out. Doctors pronounced him dead at the hospital later that night.

Fostoria Police Chief Keith Loreno told the TV station you should never try and break up a fight between dogs.

Friends Of BVS Building More “Little Free Library” Locations

7/24/17 – 6:49 A.M.

An effort to get more kids in the community to read is expanding. The Courier reports Friends of BVS are installing “Little Free Library” locations at Findlay’s primary and intermediate schools. They first installed a location at the Blanchard Valley School a few years ago.

The locations allow kids to take a book whenever they like. Friends of BVS board president Christina Treece says the idea is that if you take a book you also leave a book. However, she said there are no due dates and whether you return a book is up to you.

Treece says the “Little Free Libraries” help serve kids who might not be able to get to the library. She adds it’s helpful for parents who have kids with behavioral issues and worry their children might damage the books.

The top shelf of the locations also have dry goods for area families in need.

Part Of U.S. 224 West Of Findlay Closing Today

7/24/17 – 5:21 A.M.

Road work will close another highway in our area starting today. ODOT says U.S. 224 is closed just west of State Route 235 for a culvert replacement. The agency says the work should take 30 days. The detour takes you south down Route 235 to State Route 12, west to Columbus Grove, and north on State Route 65 to Ottawa.

State Route 12 remains closed east of Benton Ridge for a bridge repair project. That closure doesn’t impact the U.S. 224 detour.

You’ll also see restricted traffic on State Routes 18 and 613 this week. ODOT says crews will restrict traffic to one lane from Van Buren to Fostoria for chipping and tarring work on the roads.

Grant Cuts Affect Court Budget

7/24/17 – 5:13 A.M.

Cuts to state grants will have a major impact on the Hancock County Common Pleas Court. The Courier reports nearly 60 percent of the common pleas court budget comes from state grants. Under the new Ohio budget the court is facing a 10 percent budget cut this year and next year. It’s also looking at a 20 percent increase in workload.

Court officials tell the newspaper the cuts amount to more than $114,000. Cuts will affect the court’s pretrial budget, intensive supervision, and the drug court. Court administrator Kim Switzer says the cutbacks will affect personnel.

Switzer says there’s a chance the county can reapply for money from the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections to get some money back, but adds that’s “still up in the air.” For now it looks like the court will either ask the commissioners for more money or cut staff.

The judges will make a final decision in September.
