Veteran Resources Fair This Sunday At Findlay Elks

The fourth annual veteran’s resource fair will be happening this weekend. Executive director of Hancock County Veterans Service Office Nichole Coleman said that there will be plenty of vendors to learn from.

The fair will be this Sunday from 2-5 pm at the Elks, followed by a spaghetti dinner at 5:30 pm.

Farmers Market In Findlay Moved This Thursday

The Findlay Farmers Market will be moving out of the Hancock County Fairgrounds this weekend. Due to conflicting events, the market will be held at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts. The market will be from 4-6:30 pm this Thursday. Local food trucks will be available to provide food.

Ohio Gas Prices Up To Start The Work Week

7/31/17 – 7:25 A.M.

Local gas prices are up as we start a new work week. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price in Findlay for a gallon of regular is $2.32. That up 16 cents from last Monday. Prices are 28 cents higher that what we were paying a month ago.

Ottawa drivers report paying $2.29 per gallon today. That’s a 10 cent increase over the last week.

Local prices are in line with the state average, which stands at $2.21 per gallon. That’s also up 10 cents over the last seven days.

State Patrol Makes Large Drug Bust Near Upper Sandusky

7/31/17 – 7:15 A.M.

State patrol troopers made a large drug bust near Upper Sandusky last week. WMFD reports troopers seized 240 pounds of Khat during a traffic stop. Khat is a stimulant that is a controlled substance.

Officers arrested 19-year-old Jesse Nam of Dearborn, Michigan and 20-year-old Christian Reivera-Ittayem of Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Both face charges of possession of Khat and trafficking in drugs.

Former Editor At The Courier Passes Away

A former editor at the Courier passed away over the weekend. Bob Hesse ran the Courier’s newsroom for 30 years and worked for the newspaper for 42 years. Hesse was 73-years-old.

Hesse retired from the newspaper in 2007. Aside from editor, he also served as city editor, managing editor, and executive editor.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Smith-Crates Funeral Home in North Baltimore.

Road Work Continues In Findlay This Week

7/31/17 – 5:29 A.M.

Work continues on several Findlay roads this week. You’ll see lane reductions on North Main Street between Trenton and Bigelow avenues for curb replacement and paving work. Trenton Avenue between Main and Blanchard streets is also reduced to one lane in each direction as paving continues.

The city is closing College Street between Morey and Broad avenues for curb replacement. Crews are also closing East-View Drive and West-View Drive between Sixth Street and Redbird Drive for curb replacement work.

A storm-sewer installation project has Dayton Avenue closed from Tiffin Avenue to the north dead end.

Highways Remain Closed West Of Findlay This Week

7/31/17 – 5:23 A.M.

Road work continues in many spots in Hancock County this week. ODOT says crews continue to work on a culvert on U.S. 224 east of Findlay and a bridge on State Route 12 west of Benton Ridge. ODOT has closed both highways near the construction areas for the time being.

You’ll also see lane restrictions on State Routes 613 and 18 between Van Buren and Fostoria as crews remove pavement reflectors. They’re preparing for tarring and chipping work in that area.

ODOT also plans daily lane closures in early August on U.S. 68 between the Findlay Airport and the Eagle Creek. They are installing a cable barrier in the median in that area.

There is some good traffic news coming this week. ODOT says the exit ramp from Route 15 to U.S. 68 south of Findlay should reopen.

Weekend Fire Damages Home Near Vanlue

7/31/17 – 5:11 A.M.

Fire destroyed a garage and damaged a home northeast of Value over the weekend. Vanlue firefighters responded to 130 State Route 568 around 5 p.m. Saturday. They were able to bring the flames under control in about 15 minutes.

Vanlue Fire Chief Mark Price says the blaze started in a detached garage and spread to the house. No one was injured and firefighters were able to rescue a dog from the basement of the home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Emergency responders limited traffic on 568 to one lane while they battled the blaze.
