OVI Checkpoint Scheduled For Tomorrow And Sunday

06/23/17 – 4:27 P.M.

There were 313 OVI-related fatal accidents causing 346 deaths last year, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. There will be an OVI checkpoint in Hancock County to help deter and intercept these impaired drivers and stop potential accidents. A release from the Findlay Post of the State Highway Patrol says that the checkpoint is funded with federal grant funds. It will start tomorrow evening and go into Sunday morning.

The location of the checkpoint has not been released yet.

New Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development Project Specialist Announced

Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development has a new project specialist. Angela DeBoskey comes from North Carolina where she said that she also worked in economic development. She added that she was happy to find an open position.

DeBoskey said that she’ll be taking on many responsibilities.

She added that she will also be working on business expansion and retention and getting to know the businesses in the area.

UPDATE: City Of Findlay Has New Police Chief

UPDATE 3:05 P.M.

The City of Findlay has a new Police Chief. Mayor Lydia Mihalik announced the appointment of John Dunbar to the position yesterday. Safety Director Paul Schmelzer said that there was some competition for the position.

He has 25 years of experience in police service and had been a lieutenant since 2010. Mihalik added that she believes he has the skills to lead Findlay Police in a manner that best uses their talents. Schmelzer agreed, adding that Dunbar will make a good leader.

Dunbar was appointed as the acting police chief in February of this year after the retirement of Chief Greg Horne.

BGSU Names Computer Lab In Honor Of Hancock County Judge

A lab at Bowling Green State University will bare the name of a retired Hancock County judge. The university’s board of trustees voted to name a computer lab in the Michael and Sara Kuhlin Center after Judge Allan Davis.

Davis is a 1965 graduate of BGSU. He served as the Hancock County Probate/Juvenile Court judge for more than 40 years.

Lady Justice To Face A New Direction In Seneca County

After some debate, officials in Seneca County have decided to change the way a statue of Lady Justice will face at the new Joint Justice Center in downtown Tiffin. The Review-Times reports the statue was originally going to face the southwest. But during a recent Leadership Core Team meeting members changed their mind.

Group members said people approached them and said the statue should face toward the main part of the building. That means shifting the direction of the statue to the west.

Hancock Park District Names New Natural Resource Manager

The Hancock Park District has a new natural resource manager. The Courier reports Robert Sams will start in his new role on July 3. He takes the place of Sarah Betts, who became the director of the Seneca County Park District in May.

Sams served as natural resource assistant under Betts and has undertaken natural resource duties since her resignation. During his 10 years with the park district, Sams also has worked as a park service ranger.

Three Findlay Residents Accused Of Selling Drugs

6/23/17 – 6:52 A.M.

Three Findlay residents are facing drug charges after the Hancock County grand jury released secret indictments this week. The Courier reports 24-year-old Devante Blesset faces a count of trafficking fentanyl. He’s also charged with a count of trafficking in oxycodone within 1,000 feet of a juvenile.

24-year-old Leon Sheeter faces a count of aggravated trafficking in oxycodone. Authorities have also charged Sheeter with a count of permitting drug abuse.

25-year-old Jaesun Bame faces two counts of trafficking in LSD.

All of the alleged drug sales happened in 2016.

Teen Killed In Seneca County Crash Thursday Morning

6/23/17 – 5:31 A.M.

A two-car crash in Seneca County took the life of a Chatfield teenager Thursday morning. The State Highway Patrol reports the crash on State Route 100 killed 17-year-old Chase Lutz and injured 57-year-old John Gegorski of Fremont.

Investigators say Lutz was driving north on the highway near Melmore around 6 a.m. when he went left of center and hit a pickup truck driven by Gegorski. Life Flight took Lutz to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo where doctors pronounced him dead. Sycamore EMS took Gegorski to Mercy Tiffin Hospital for treatment.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.
