Fostoria Firefighters Battle Blaze In RV

6/5/17 – 6:43 A.M.

Fire destroyed a Benton Ridge couple’s RV in Fostoria late last week. The Review-Times reports Sky Kirvan was driving through Fostoria last Friday when he and his wife heard a popping noise and the RV started overheating. They got out of the RV and detached a trailer hauling a motorcycle before firefighters arrived at the intersection of Findlay Street and Independence Road.

Shortly after the fire started, a car rear-ended another vehicle in the area. The newspaper reports all five people involved in the crash refused medical treatment.

Findlay Roads Closed For Several Projects This Week

6/5/17 – 5:39 A.M.

You’ll see plenty of orange barrels in Findlay again this week. The city says West Main Cross between Western and Glessner avenues remains closed as crews continue curb repair work.

Elsewhere, the city is closing Northview Street between Main and Hulick streets and Greendale Avenue between Woodworth and Canteberry drives for curb work. Crews are also closing Circle Drive for curb replacement.

The construction plan closes Sandusky Street from Main Street to Cory street for road widening. A storm sewer replacement project is closing Dayton Avenue between Tiffin and Balsey avenues.

Crews will reduce North Main Street to one lane between Trenton and Melrose avenues for curb replacement.

Pavement Repair Planned In Putnam County

You’ll see ODOT crews fixing pavement in several areas of Putnam County this week. ODOT says crews are working on State Route 12 between the Hancock County line and State Route 115, U.S. 224 between Hancock and Van Wert Counties, and State Route 696 between State Route 12 and the Allen County line.

The agency is maintaining traffic through the work zones.

ODOT Projects Continue In Hancock County

6/5/17 – 5:23 A.M.

ODOT crews are continuing to work on berms in Hancock County this week. The agency says you’ll see work on State Route 235 between the Hardin and Wood County lines.

Other projects continue in Hancock County this week as well. No major changes are taking place on I-75 in Findlay as the widening project continues. State Route 12 remains closed west of Benton Ridge for a bridge repair project. The U.S 15 exit ramp to U.S. 68 south of Findlay also remains closed for bridge repair.

Local Funeral Homes Bought

6/5/17 – 5:15 A.M.

A pair of Bowling Green residents have bought two area funeral homes. The Courier reports Kraig and Kay Hanneman of Hanneman Funeral Homes bought the Lehtomaa Funeral Home on Osborn Avenue in Findlay. They also bought the Hartley-Lehtomaa Funeral Home in McComb.

The name of the Findlay location is changing to the Hanneman Funeral home, while the McComb location is changing to the Hartley-Hanneman Funeral Home.

Murder-Suicide Reported Near Tiffin

6/5/17 – 5:06 A.M.

Two people died in an apparent murder-suicide near Tiffin late last week. The Advertiser-Tribune reports the incident happened in a home on South County Road 19 Friday afternoon.

Sheriff Bill Eckelberry told the newspaper the county coroner’s office took 78-year-old Alma Moffett and 75-year-old Paul Moffett to Mercy Health-Tiffin Hospital’s morgue. Eckelberry said Alma’s daughter went to check on her mother when she didn’t show up for dinner. When she looked inside the home it appeared her mother and stepfather were dead.

Eckelberry said it looks like Paul took Alma’s life and then his own.

The case remains under investigation.

Sand Wand Can Help Clean Rivers And Raise Funds

Streamside Technology of Findlay Was down in Bluffton Friday to show their river cleaning technology. CEO Randall Tucker said that the Sand Wand gives local communities power over cleaning up rivers.

Tucker said that the Sand Wand works like a safe vacuum cleaner. It takes the sediment but leaves the bugs.

The Sand Wand takes the sediment out of the river and deposits it into a hole dug above the 25-year flood level. Tucker said that local communities can then sell the sediment which can help fund the river cleaning.

New Carey Fiscal Officer Expected To Be Named Monday

Carey’s Mayor said that a new fiscal officer is expected to be named on Monday. The Courier reports that Mayor Jennifer Rathburn said the administration conducted final interviews on Thursday. She added that she plans to appoint a candidate for the village council to approve during their Monday meeting.

The fiscal officer position became open when Nickie Coppler resigned. She accepted a position with the Wyandot County auditor’s office.

Former Acting Findlay Police Chief Pleads Guilty To Domestic Violence

A former acting Findlay police chief pleaded guilty to domestic violence but could have his case dismissed. The Courier reports that 46-year-old Sean Young will attend a 26-week diversion program. Visiting Judge Dwight Osterud agreed to the terms put forward by Young’s attorney. If he completes the domestic violence counseling program then his case will be dismissed.

His wife accused him of throwing a video camera at her on February 4. Toni Young needed medical attention and petitioned for a protection order on February 8. She also said her husband “squeezed and grabbed” one of their children the prior week. Sean Young was formally charged on March 3.

Charity Golf Classic To Raise Money For Local Non-Profit Organizations

06/02/17 – 11:12 A.M.

The 28th Annual Julie Cole Charity Golf Classic is coming to the Findlay Country Club next Monday. Professional guests include Pat McGowan, Craig Stadler, and Findlay Native Julie Cole. Spectators can buy day passes for $10 to watch the tournament and have lunch. At 8 a.m. there will be registration and breakfast. A professionals’ clinic will follow at 9 a.m. on the driving range. The tournament will start at 9:30 a.m.with an awards ceremony afterward.

Over the past 28 years, the Julie Cole Charity Golf Classic has raised $2.6 million fo local non-profit organizations. This year, the money will go to Bridge Hospice, the Women’s Center of Bluffton Hospital, and the Julie Cole Golf Fund for Junior Golfers.
