Event Tomorrow To Go Over Protection For Elderly Citizens

The Putnam County Interdisciplinary Team is bringing awareness to World Elder Abuse Day with an event tomorrow. Crime Victim Services’ Elder Victim Advocate Becca Peckinpaugh said that they will cover power of attorney and guardianship options.

She added that there will be two professional speakers for the event to go over the options. The free event will be from 9 -11 a.m. at the Meadows of Kalida in Kalida. It is free but reservations are suggested. You can reserve a spot by calling 419-523-1111 and asking for Becca Peckinpaugh.

Riverside Summer Concert Series Starts This Wednesday

06/13/17 – 7 P.M.

The Riverside Summer Concert Series kicks off its 66th season tomorrow at Riverside Park in Findlay. The series is starting things off with the Fostoria Community Band. The series will feature live music entertainment every Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. and occasional Sunday concerts from 7-8:30 p.m.

Putnam County To Get Its First Recovery Housing

Putnam County will get it’s first Recovery Housing unit this July or August in Ottawa. The Putnam County Sentinel reports that Pathways Counseling Center is figuring out the details for the unit. These include standards, rules, and requirements for the program’s first residents. Pathways Counseling Center will also be responsible for managing the recovery housing program.

Executive director Aaron Baumgartner said, “The intent is simply to help someone who is actively in recovery.” The program is not intended to provide a place to live for someone in recovery and struggling to find stable housing. It is meant to provide an optimal environment to aid someone who is already in recovery.

Findlay City School Administration Offices To Move

The administrative offices of Findlay City Schools will be moving to a new location. The Courier reports that the offices will be moved to the Great Scot building on Broad Avenue. The school board authorized Superintendent Ed Kurt and Treasurer Mike Barnhart to negotiate the deal during an executive session.

The agreement shouldn’t exceed $67,500 per year for three years. Around 20 employees will move from the Washington Administration Building to an unoccupied space in the grocery store. Barnhart told the newspaper that they will move as soon as possible.

Findlay City School Board Discusses Innovation Plan For Education

Findlay City School Board learned about the 5-year innovation plan the administration is starting. Superintendent Ed Kurt said they want to help kids learn more STEAM processes.

Kurt said that this plan will not only improve education but also lines up with their strategic plan.

It will focus on STEAM concepts which are science, technology, engineering, art, and math. It will allow students to learn how to solve problems in these areas which will be applicable to other areas of life. It will help them build critical thinking, communication, and creative skills. It will also help with building collaboration.

The plan makes it so that 21st century skills are being taught in the classroom to prepare students for their future. Kurt added that they will implement this plan in all of the schools in the district.

Findlay Man Pleads Guilty To Lesser Charges To Avoid Rape Trial

A Findlay man due to stand trial on a rape charge pleaded guilty to lesser offenses. The Courier reports that 55-year-old Rodolfo Sierra was sentenced to 71 months in prison by Judge Reginald Routson. He was convicted of gross sexual imposition and sexual battery.
 
The charges stemmed from a sexual assault in May of last year. If he had been convicted of rape, he could have faced up to 10 years in prison. The victim chose not to attend the Monday hearing. An advocate said that she was still traumatized by the assault.
 
Assistant Prosecutor Steve Powell called the plea bargain the “best resolution of the case”. It meant that Sierra will still serve serious time and the victim will not have to face her attacker.

Turbines Coming To Findlay To Help Power Valfilm Headquarters

Valfilm Inc. Announced plans to power their North American Headquarters in Findlay with wind turbines. The company said the Wind for Industry project is designed to reduce the manufacturing plant’s electrical consumption. One Energy is financing the $6.9 million project. Valfilm will pay for the Turbines through a fixed electrical rate over the next 20 years.

As part of the project, Valfilm will establish two $5,000 Megawatt Scholarships for local students. The scholarships will be awarded every year the turbines are in use and will go to students pursuing a degree in the STEM field.

Findlay Mayor Returns From D.C. After Presidential Infrastructure Summit

Findlay Mayor Lydia Mihalik joined a summit in Washington D.C and talked about regulations on infrastructure. She said that federal government wants to help out.

She said that regulations on building infrastructure sometimes burden projects.

Mihalik explained that the tests and licenses make sense for some projects but not others. She said that Findlay had to do a $4,200 environmental assessment for an $800 waterline replacement.

Micah Hyde’s Football Camp Draws 500

6/12/17 – 7:35 A.M.

500 kids turned out for a football camp in Fostoria over the weekend. Former Redman standout and current Buffalo Bill Micah Hyde organized the event. Hyde brought friends from the NFL with him to the camp, including Cleveland Browns linebacker Christian Kirksey and Los Angeles Chargers defensive back Casey Hayward.

The Courier reports Hyde offered the camp to kids for free, and raised money for his foundation, the Geary Family YMCA, and Fostoria Athletic Boosters through business sponsorships.

Hyde recently started the the IMagINe for Youth foundation. It aims to refurbish athletic equipment and donate it to schools.

Local Gas Prices Down To Start The Week

Local gas prices are down as we start the new work week. OhioGasPrices.com reports the average price in Findlay is $2.17 per gallon. That’s down 11 cents from last Monday.

Ottawa drivers are paying some of the lowest rates in our region at $2.12 per gallon today. That’s down 17 cents from last Monday. Prices in Ottawa are the lowest they’ve been in around a month.

The statewide average is $2.22 for a gallon of regular. That’s a 12 cent drop over the last seven days.
